I struggle to run in my heals, and I can tell William is holding back for me. I end up kicking them off so I would be able to keep up with him better, hopping on one foot to take off the other, all while his hand firmly stays clasped around my wrist. William only slows his pace down for a split second to allow me to get my heels off. Once they are all the way off, he starts to pick up his speed again. He's practically dragging me.
My feet feel like they're on fire hitting the stone walkway, stepping on all the rigid pebbles and all the other unknown things that people drop. I bite my lip, hoping to distract the pain from my feet, but that does not last long when I try to breath out, gasping for air while I run.
We gain distance from the mob and he quickly pulls me to round the corner. We took another sharp right and wait for them to catch up. I hold my breath in anticipation, praying they would not turn this way. When the mob finally reaches us, they thankfully went left.
Being in the clear, I bent over trying to catch my breath that I have been holding. William looks less out of breath, but he still is taking a moment to rest.
"Well that takes my suspicions from you. The king must have assumed you were the one that told the people and now wants to punish you," William concludes.
"What are we supposed to do now?" I question.
He looks over at me and I can tell whatever he's about to say, he's dreading, but does so anyways, "You have to come with me. There's no way you can stay here anymore with a warrant for your arrest. Even if you tell the king you're innocent, he will still follow through with his plans. Everyone thinks you're on my side."
It feels like I'm being pulled into a dark hole with no escape. Panic sets over me and I start to breath heavily. William is quick to hold my shoulders, but everything he is saying to me is just a blur. Of course I couldn't wait to get out of my home, but this is not how I imagine it happening. I finally try to focus in on him. Trying to keep my icy blue eyes focused on his emerald green ones.
"Look you're going to be okay. It will just be until everything blows over," he try's comforting me. "Shh it's okay I'm right here. Nothing bad is going to happen to you."
I know he's only saying that to calm me down. If I leave there's no way I would be able to return. I finally gave in and my breathing starts to ease back into normal patterns. My eyes gloss over with tears but I refuse to cry in front of him so I blink them away.
"What exactly do you mean? Where am I going to go with you? What about my sister? I can't just leave her." I concernly express with a shaky voice.
"You have no choice if you want to protect them," he states. "If you go home and your family keeps you hidden then people find out, not only will you be found and hung, but your family will too."
I don't want to believe that what he's saying is the truth, but at the same time I know he's right. Who knew I would allow myself to get this deep in trouble with a pirate. I simply nod at him and he brought one of his hands down to my hand again. I feel comfortable with his touch and it puts me more at ease, but I shake those thoughts away. I need to remember that he is still a pirate. He takes a peek around the corner. I presume it's clear because suddenly he's pulling me again. We weave in and out of the alleys to stay clear of any other people.
Luckily, we make it back onto the main gravel road. It's the same road I take to get to my house. There are no alleyways to stay hidden, so we drop down to hide in the tall, itchy grass. The sun has set so soon it will be much easier to get around unnoticed in the dark.
I suddenly stop, leaving William no choice but to do the same. He furrows his eyebrows and tugs at my hand to get me to move forward, but I stay standing still.
"I have to say my farewells to Melody," I command, only for it to come out like I'm not very confident or sure of what I'm saying.
"I know you want to but you just can't, it's too risky. People are bound to be waiting for you there," William stresses.
I look at him pleadingly, hoping he will give me this one chance. So I continue, "Please, I'm begging you, this could be the last chance I see her and I don't want her wondering what happened to me. There's also something special I want to grab. And my house is right down the road from here."
He stares at me and I can tell he's contemplating. He sighs and looks tis the ground.
"Fine, but you must follow my lead. And you get in then get out. You have three minutes tops. Okay?" He checks with me.
I nod eagerly, smiling ear to ear. He gives me a small smile in return showing none of this teeth.
We now continue down the road. I see my house and sure enough people are surrounding it, waiting to see if I would return. The all hold pitch forks, knifes, rotten food, and rocks. I look over at William and it appears he's rethinking his decision, but it's too late to take that back now.
"Okay, there's no way you will be able to get into your house without a distraction. I'll go out and have them chase me-" he plans before I cut him off.
"What? No, you can't voluntarily just go out there. We can think of another plan," I counter.
"Do you want to see your family or not?" He questions.
"Well, of course but-"
"Then it's settled. You have three minutes then meet me up the road at the old church," he directs.
Without giving my another choice, William gives his signature smirk. And just like that he's off. I stare after him baffled. Is he stupid? I watch silently from afar as he walks up to the group.
"Hey guys looking for me?" I hear him call out while his back is facing me.
The group of people stare at him in shock and some in confusion. Heck, I would too if a fugitive just showed up voluntarily too. But not a second later they all sprint after him and William takes off down the road. He's clearly much faster than him so I'm sure he will be fine. I hope.
