"Virgil, are you unreservedly sure you want to do this? Once you do this, there is no going back. This will change your entire life, future, and universe."

Virgil stared at the red string wrapped around his right ring finger. Only he could see this mysterious phenomenon connecting him to some stranger he is supposed to be soulmates with. Virgil hates strangers, but he also hates being afraid. What will happen once he cuts it? What if it fails because he wasn't determined enough? Virgil was shaking while the only person he ever felt feelings for stared at him through the Skype call on his laptop.

"I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't want to do it, Logan."

"There's no need to snap at me about it."

"You're right, you're right, I'm sorry. I'm just..."

"Anxious?"

"Yeah."

What time Even is it? Four in the morning? Why was Logan even up? He should be resting so he can get to his NASA internship with a clear head. But no. They're here. They're gonna clip their strings together. Logan has bags under his eyes, clear to see through the pixels. He also had an army knife in his right hand, ready to sever the string invisible to Virgil tied to his his left.

"Virgil, we both have reached an agreement in opinion. We both know that we would rather choose our own romantic partner for the rest of our lives rather than leave it to be a stranger. I detest unpredictability and you're afraid of whom it might be on the other side of the string. It's better that we do the task of cutting the red string of fate sooner rather than later."

"Tonight. We have to do it tonight. My string's been tugging and tugging at me for the past week. I can't take it any more. I don't want it!"

"Then let's cut it. It's the most logical thing to do."

"But what if they hate me? What if they find me despite cutting it and get super mad at me? What if they hurt me? Oh gods what if they hurt you. Logan I can't have them finding you. I don't want yoh to get hurt I-"

"You're being irrational, stormcloud. You're letting your anxiety get the better of you. These feelings are valid, of course, however they are simply not factual. You're going to be okay and I'm going to be okay. There is nothing to be afraid of. You deserve the right to choose your own fate. We both deserve that right, and that is what we are doing right now."

"Yeah... Yeah. I deserve the right to make my own decisions. A string can't make a decision like that for me!"

"Agreed. Now, are you ready?"

"Perfectly!"

"Then, we shall commence."

Squeezing his eyes shut, Virgil slammed the scissors around the string. There was zero resistance. It cut like a knife on warm butter. There was no fight like any of the other times Virgil played with the string or tried to cut it in his past. Virgil opened his eyes and watched the string pathetically fall to the floor, shriveling up and turning brown like a withering leaf when autumn becomes winter. It was... liberating.

There was silence on the Skype call as four in the morning became five. A short buzzing alarm was in the background of Logan's side of the call, but the noise demanded no attention. Virgil just stared at the string as a large weight is lifted off of his chest. He wriggled his ring finger, now freed of the red string of fate. It felt... lighter. Like nothing was weighing him down. He didn't have to fear the stranger on the other side. He was free to make a choice. He was free to be with Logan forever.

Wait. Logan! Was he okay?! Virgil yanked his laptop into his lap, desperately searching for Logan. He wasn't on the screen. Logan? LOGAN?! Was he okay? Oh no was he hurt!? Did he fail? The string won't cut so,stokes and no  really really hurts your chest when you do. Virgil knows from experience.

Logan had relief wash all over him when Logan returned back into the vision. He had a shriveled up red string in his hands. Wait.. why can Virgil see the string? Only two soulmates can see their own strings. That's super weird. Virgil placed his index finger on the screen where Logan's cheek was. Even though Logan wasn't crying, Virgil was trying to wipe his tears through the laptop. Virgil was so emotionally exaughsted.

"Virgil, you've succeeded I assume?"

"Yeah. We did it. We're free."

"Then you should be able to rest easy. I do hope you'll go back to sleep after this."

"What about you?"

"I have to be at NASA at promptly six-hundred hours. After my work is done for the day, I will come over for a visit. Is that satisfactory, stormcloud?"

"Perfectly. Have fun at your space job."

"I will."

"Night night Logan."

"Goodnight, Virgil."

Logan ended the Skype call first, like always. Virgil closed his laptop with a smile on his face. He tucked the laptop under his arm and stood up. It was time to get off the floor of whatever room he was in, as it was not specified at the beginning of the oneshot, and he a,de his way towards his bedroom. He was going to get some sleep for the first time in a long while. He was going to have a good dream. He just knows it.

Once in his bedroom, he navigated everything perfectly in pitch darkness. He set his laptop on his desk, grabbed his build-a-bear stuffed animal that Logan brought him to make, and he flopped face down on his bed. He cuddled the stuffed animal close to his chest and he closed his eyes. Before long, he was asleep and dreaming. What was he dreaming of? Well. I would hope that was obvious by now.

He's dreaming of Logan being his soulmate, always and forever.
