I threw my phone on the bed and looked through some of my old stuff. Today was the day where I threw everything I didn't need any more away. I found some of the stuff that Ryder gave me during the few months we were dating and I felt something squeezing at my chest. I felt pain because of what had happened, but it needed to be done. I was just glad he was out of my life and the nightmare was finally over. I had the twins for that, and I knew they would help me through it all.
My notifications kept going off, some were from Instagram, others were spam messages. Only one was from my mother.
Birth Giver: Come to the living room. We're going to greet out new neighbors.
I didn't notice until then when I looked out my window that we had new neighbors. A few years ago, my best friend lived there until he had to move back to London with his family. We sent letters to each other for a while, but I haven't gotten anything or heard from him for a while. The thought made me upset, but if he didn't want to answer to my letters anymore, then I respected that. I got up and closed the door to my room when I walked out behind me. I met up my mom who was impatiently waiting for me in the kitchen and we left to greet out new neighbors. They were a pretty nice couple, they had just moved from Chicago and were excited to know what a mild weather winter could be here in Texas.
"Sorry to disappoint you but Winter is pretty hot here, you probably want to move more north if you want it to be cold" I said. The couple laughed, but I knew that what I had said wasn't right since my mom gave me a sideways glare. They didn't seem to catch on to the tension between my mother and i since my mom was being as fake as ever. She always tried too hard to keep up appearances with anyone we met, and I never understood why. The lady had a weird accent, and I interrupted yet again to ask where she was from.
"Oh Mija," she said laughing "I am from Havana, Cuba" she said smiling with a lot of pride but her smile faltered a little when she thought about it more. I kept up with the news, and I knew that her country was going through a tuff time, and those who didn't leave the island in time were struggling.
"I apologize, I didn't mean to upset you ma'am" I said quickly. My mom was fuming besides me, and I already knew that when we got home I wouldn't hear the end of it.
"Oh don't worry about that now Mija," she said smiling. Her smile grew as she looked towards the moving truck "you should meet out son Lucas, I bet you guys will get along. He is your age and will be going to school with you." she said excited. I looked towards the moving truck and saw a scrawny kid with glasses trying to lift one of the big boxes. I looked at my mom questioningly, but all she did was smile at me menacingly. 'Be Nice' she said with her fake smile. The lady- Mrs. James- called her son over, and I had to do a double take.
