I was leaning against my locker, waiting for the twins and watching the chaos unfold in the hallways of Kenny High School. I observed how people just ran around, hurrying to class or the way couples would shamelessly make out for the public to see. I sat back and watched how everyone stressed over this one moment in their lives, the very moment that in a few years they would forget. I saw Bethany down the hallway; she was arguing with her boyfriend. He left her there crying and walked off with his group of idiot friends. I was about to walk towards her when the last warning bell rang, making me hesitate before finally deciding to go to my next period. Gym was one of my best classes, it was easy. The twins had football this period, so I would see them shortly. Meanwhile, coach made us run laps for punishment.
"Come on people pick up the pace!" Coach yelled from the other side of the field. He made us run in groups of 3-4 people, if someone was falling behind, then the group had to stay with that person, if someone ran ahead, the rest of the group had to haul ass to catch up. Otherwise, that one person would earn himself extra laps, or make everyone else fail the team effort exercise. I was with the athletic group, so we would most likely finish our laps sooner.
"Want some company?" I looked to my side and saw Lucas jogging next to me. He wasn't in this class last time I checked, and he wasn't wearing any sort of gym clothes either. He was wearing black jeans, a grey T-shirt and boots. I raised an eyebrow at him.
"What do you want?" I said, trying to not get distracted by him and falling behind. My group wouldn't care and leave me anyway, making me run more laps once coach noticed. So far, coach hadn't noticed and I was safe for now. "You need to leave" I saw a lot of people look our way and start to whisper. It was bad enough to have a reputation, I didn't need rumors about my non-planned encounters with Lucas to be added to the things that people whispered about me in the hallways.
"Come on" he said smirking "Your boyfriends are not around, we can talk for a while" I sped up and tried to run ahead, but Lucas caught up to me easily making me roll my eyes. The girls that passed us were giving me pissed off looks, and scoffing when they saw who Lucas was talking to. I didn't need to give females another reason to hate me at this school, so I tried my best to ignore Lucas but he was very persistent. "Talk to me"
"Dude leave me alone!" I said a little too loud. This morning's conversation didn't go unnoticed, and I've been getting a lot of shit from girls and Tiffani's minions because of it. I knew sooner or later she was going to confront me about it, and that was something I wasn't looking forward to.
"Why?" he asked confuse. He saw I was ignoring him and ran ahead before starting to jog backwards. This man is crazy, he could fall at any moment, yet he was doing it anyways.
"I have nothing to say to you" I tried blocking him out and caught up with my group, but it was too late. Coach had been staring at us for the past minute or so and blew his whistle, pointing his white clipboard our way and signaling for us to go over to him. I sighed, knowing I wasn't going to hear the end of his lecture. "Go away Lucas" I said, walking towards were coach was standing with his arms crossed.
"Cooper, Ten more laps for you" coach said when I approached him. I was about to protest when he blew his whistle in my face and pointed his clipboard towards where the class was running in the field. I was about to join my previous group when he yelled "Alone! Around the field."
"Fuck this" I said, stopping from going to where I was supposed to start and walked towards the locker room. I was almost there, leaving behind a very pissed off coach threatening me with detention If I didn't come back and run my laps when Lucas tried to stop me. He tried grabbing me by the arm but I shrugged him off and kept walking to the locker room.
