Chapter 20- Revenge

Beth-

It wasn’t easy, being without him. I’d expected that, if time would allow, he would be the one to see me into my apartment again. I’d expected he’d walk through the front door with me, carrying the few boxes of things I’d collected at Rhonda’s during my week-long stay there. He’d say, “I bet you missed this place, being on your own.”

And I’d say, “Of course I missed it. But I’m better now, so I can handle it.”

He’d kiss me in between his box carrying, unable to wait until we were through unpacking. He’d tell me how glad he was that he was on a small break from the tour to be with me. I’d tell him how I wouldn’t have it any other way. He’d tell me all about Louis and Christa and Niall and Leah and Liam and Lizzy, and even Zayn and Margaret. How they all have everything perfectly in line now, how God had worked so many things out for all of them. How He was working everything out for us, too. How we could go on a group date as soon as the tour was over.

            In a flash, reality struck.

I pulled the Chrysler into the small parkway and put it in park, looking up at the ceiling of the vehicle. The nearly brand new covering on the interior stared back, its blandness filling the awkward space. At least I had a nice, new vehicle to drive. At least the window was fixed since the incident at the gas station. At least I still had a kidney. The small smile made its way to my face before I could help it. I was thankful for everything that had happened in the last two months. It was good to be back here, on my own, making my own memories in this beautiful place.

Even if it was without the one guy I wanted with me.

I had no clue where Harry was, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to know. The band was still on tour, of course, for another month or two. The August air was dissipating, almost as if the second September hit it would be an entirely new season. Kure beach was a bit like that, with the sudden dramatic weather changes. I couldn’t wait until winter, when the weather would rarely be cold, but would always smell like Christmas.

I’d finally recovered from my kidney surgery and spent an extra week with Rhonda, working from there on the newspaper. Moving back into my own apartment had never felt more refreshing. I finally, for the first time in a long time, felt that my life could go back to normal. Well, whatever normal was before Ross came along and ruined me. Before the gas station incident. Before Harry. The pre-disaster normal was all I knew to call it, but it was enough for me right now. Getting all the boxes out of the car would make it feel even more normal.
