Chapter 15- Surprise

November, 2013

Beth-

The small tune escaped my lips as I crossed the room, pulling on my favorite jeans and a light green shirt. The sound of Harry’s voice kept calling me, begging me to get lost in my feelings for him as time wore on. It was growing increasingly tiresome to keep quiet about Ross, especially with the way Harry was so forthcoming with me about everything. But I continuously fought back those thoughts, concentrating on making it another day with him being so far away all the time.

Most days, we could tell a funny story or two about the previous day’s events. Mine were generally about Rhonda; some of the things she said in public could be quite embarrassing, and it was easy for me to impersonate her on the phone. Harry always got a laugh out of it. Today was no different. “She had this crazy idea that pointing out what she thought were ‘cute guys’ in the middle of the grocery store was okay. I couldn’t even bear telling her that most of the men she mentioned were at least her age, and if not, they had children with them or a wedding ring on. I kinda just nodded each time she said, ‘oh, there you go, Bethany.’ I finally had to tell her to stop once she started talking to a guy who was there with his wife, trying to set us up on a date.”

True to the norm, Harry laughed and insisted that he had to meet her when he stopped by again. I promised I wouldn’t leave her out in my introducing, and he launched into his story for the day.

Today, his story was about Niall and Liam being goofballs, obsessing over their girlfriends until Zayn had had enough. He told them to shut up and call the girls back if they missed them so much. Louis hadn’t said much, but then again, Louis was the more silent type when it came to girls. “I think finally know why they obsess like they do, though,” Harry admitted to me. “They’re just more vocal about it than Louis or I would ever be.”

Though I knew he was talking about me, I couldn’t help but ponder the boys’ attitudes about my relationship with Harry. He’d been calling me nearly every day recently, or as much as management allowed. I knew that took away from time with his friends, and they probably noticed. Louis was the only one to ever officially speak to me or become my friend; the others – I could never know what they thought of me.

I did, however, know what Harry thought of me, and this time, he asked me something that I only partially knew how to answer. Just before I was about to say goodbye so I could get ready for work, he did it. “Uh… Beth?”
            “Yeah?”
“You’ve been… acting different lately, you know. Like, happier. Why?”
The question took me back for a moment, back to a time only a few months ago when I attended church with Christa. Since, I’d grown increasingly fond of the people there – the members, their children, and the pastor. Even the simple layout of the church had become something of a safe haven to me in the wake of Ross’ destruction. I hadn’t exactly mentioned the real change to Harry, only partly because it seemed like a conversation best saved for when he came back to visit; mainly, I saved the conversation from him because I didn’t know what to think of the change myself.
