Chapter 10- Burning Bridges
Eight Months Later
July, 2013
Harry-
“Lou wants to Skype,” Niall said, jabbing me with his empty waffle cone. He turned back to the counter and took the ice cream scoop, piling out a nice helping for himself into the cone. I knew he’d have that eaten before we could even get a conversation going with Louis.
“Why?” I paused, smirking at him and his eating habits. “You tell him we were coming to visit him?”
“I didn’t. But now’s a good time, I guess.” Niall took a big lick form his ice cream. “We can’t just drop in on him like that.”Louis had decided to take a holiday from the band a few months back. It was hard for all of us, losing a band member for a while. It had been especially hard for me, Louis being my best friend and all. The fans… they’d been hysterical for a bit. But the hype had eventually died down, and everyone was patiently awaiting Louis’ return.
When he’d announced his idea… to move down to Kure Beach and get a ‘real job’, we’d been angry. What lad with such tremendous wealth, love, and happiness could want such a thing? To leave his best mates and run away for some kind of holiday? Only Louis, I supposed. I’d asked him as much one day after his announcement. “Lou, why are you really leaving? You know you can tell me.”
“Hazza. I promise it’s not you lads. I need… I need to get a girl. Find my place in life. Get on by myself for a while.”
I took that as an acceptable answer. But it didn’t hurt me any less. When Niall told me that we could go on holiday in a week, I was ecstatic, longing to see my best mate and ready to go surfing again. And I hated to admit it, but I kind of wanted to track down Beth as well. I hadn’t mentioned that to Louis yet, but I planned on it. It had been three months since I’d seen Louis, and I was bloody excited to tell him we were coming.
Niall and I collapsed on the couch and I grabbed the laptop, signing on to Skype and pressing the call button just as quickly. Louis answered. He was dressed like his normal self, stripes and shorts, foregoing the suspenders. He spun slightly in his chair when he saw us. “Hey!” He shouted. We all cheered happily, enjoying seeing each other via this wicked thing called the Internet.
“You’ll never believe what’s happening!” Niall smiled. He’d already finished his cone, as suspected. “We’re coming to Kure Beach again!”
Louis gaped for a moment. “So you’re coming when? You know I’ve got to stock my apartment with plenty of food,” Louis smirked. He bent over and picked up something from the floor. Surprisingly, he didn’t sound as excited as I’d expected.
“Ahh, yes,” I laughed. I rolled my eyes at Niall, who reached for a candy bar from his pocket. Of course. “Plenty of food for Niall here,” I said.
Niall patted me on the arm. “I’m sure I’ll be fine with whatever you have, Lou,” he said, unwrapping and taking a bite from his candy. Niall didn’t notice me rolling my eyes or anything, just started yakking with his mouth full of candy. “We’re coming out a week from tomorrow,” he answered Louis.
