The walk there was quiet, like normal but it was more of an uncomfortable silence this time. Kuroo didn't make any of his usual jokes or try to get Kenma to talk, or smile. The shorter male looked over concerned, only to find the rooster head staring lovingly at his phone; the brightest smile painted on his face and his eyes full of admiration and care, yet they were soft. He knew that look, oh he knew it all too well. Kuroo only wore that when he looked at Kenma and made jokes about loving him. But, what was making him look like that now? Or rather... who?
Kenma felt a pain in his chest, knowing full well the silent sting of jealousy. He shook his head and looked back at his feet right as Kuroo looked over. Kuroo still hadn't told his friend what hid behind closed doors, it was only eating at him more and more because he didn't want to lie. But he didn't want to bother him, talking about the one thing neither dared to bring up, love. Kuroo's heart had been given to another and Kenma was oblivious to the emotion. After all, he had sworn not to let his heart get in the way of everything he had worked so hard to build.
He hated himself for the pain but he didn't love Kuroo. Kuroo was his friend. That was all he was and all he will ever be. A friend. Someone who knew every little detail about him. Someone who has seen him cry and break down and scream and panic. Someone who has seen him smile and laugh and joke. Someone who knew how to cheer him up and hold him when he was scared. Someone that stood by his side no matter what. Someone that loved hi- ... There was that word again. Love.
When they got to a cross path, both boys stopped in their tracks, the older breaking the awkward silence. "Hey, we leave early tomorrow morning. Pack and actually get some sleep kitten." That name. That stupid name that made his heart ache when he heard it. Kenma nodded softly, answering with a soft 'I will..' Kuroo ruffled his hair smiling "Good. See you tomorrow Ken." he walked off.
God he hated seeing him go but loved watching him walk away. Kenma reached his hand out to him knowing he was already too far out. "Out of my reach.." he mumbled, holding his head down before walking the rest of the way home.
"Kuroo Tetsurō.." Kenma sighed and looked up at the sky, seeing thousands of stars, stopping in his tracks. He looked around at the empty park, he always walked through to get home, around him before sitting down on a bench. He looked up at the sky and sighed once more "Why did it hurt? He's a friend."
An hour passed, at least that's what it felt like. He wished he could stay there forever, with the soft cold breeze against his face, the chirping of the crickets, the hooting of an owl in a tree nearby, fireflies wandering near the pond, no noise, no complicated feelings. All interrupted when his phone rang with a familiar ID popped up. He picked up the small, cold, object and held it up to his ear.
"Hi mom. -- Yeah. -- yeah sorry.. -- It was a stressful day.. -- I'm at the park.. -- It felt nice to relax.. -- I know.. -- I know.. I'm sorry.. -- I'm coming.. -- Okay bye..--" he let his hand fall in his lap with his phone still being gripped. He turned the object so he could see the screen and hung up. 9:48 pm was the time shown on it. Wow, he was here a long time, three, almost four, hours.
The rest of the walk home was uneventful. Once he got home however, he definitely got an earful from his dad. He walked straight to his room and sighed, starting to pack for his trip in a small suitcase, making sure to plug in his switch and phone before going back to the kitchen. Food was already put away so he put some on a plate and heated it up, grabbing chopsticks to eat it with. He took the plate out of the microwave and sat down alone at the small table. He bowed his head and said thanks before quietly digging in. After food was a hot, steamy, shower and then bed. He set his alarm for four in the morning and rolled away to look out his open window, the air softly hitting his face and putting him to sleep once.
What will tomorrow bring.. Only time will tell.. But what will tonight's dreams bring?
