Sunlight

The day was starting, a golden sun rising above the dewy plains. The woodwork of the old musty house was shimmering, the golden sunlight resting atop Sayaka's sleeping figure. The white comforter was akin to clouds, starkly contrasting the wooden bed frame. The moment was still, and calm.

The silence was, however, broken by a shrill beep and a disgruntled groan. Sayaka grimly got out of bed, dreading another day of work. Her dream last night was a cheering crowd and a brightly lit stage, her only aspiration in life flashing before her eyes before being snatched away.

Grimacing at the thought, Sayaka began her morning routine. She slipped on a simple cardigan, as per the workplace dress code, and threw on a small pendant. The necklace was a gift from her mother, and the gold of the heart glimmered in the early summer sun. Grabbing her book bag, she hopped out of the door and began her stroll to work.

The quaint little coffee shop was waiting for her at the end of the road, the shabby old sign still reading in a bold print, "Hope's Coffee and Tea." The inside was an organized clutter, with all of the tables and chairs being different, all vintage or antique. Bookshelves lined the walls, inviting in customers.

The morning sun shined here too, illuminating Sayaka about her morning tasks, opening up the shop to the public. The clock read 6:32, dust still waiting for her on tables and shelves. Swiftly moving, she dusted and mopped, making the room shine. Chairs were vacuumed, and the books arranged into their usual order.

The clock chimed 7, and the shop would be opening at 7:30. The door swung open, her coworker standing in the doorway. Chihiro had sweat running down his face, his cheeks flushed from his mad dash to work. He was wearing the shop's uniform, a white button-up and black slacks under his brown apron.

"Another all nighter?" Sayaka said, not looking away from her work.

Chihiro shot her an awkward smile, muttering something about an extremely important coding job he was hired for. Sayaka turned and gave him a nod, gesturing for him to start prepping the machines behind the counter. The clock continued ticking.

The door shot open once again, Komaru tripping on the doorstop. Her uniform was sloppily thrown on, her hair messy. The clock now read 7:15, and they were still waiting on Shuichi's arrival so they could begin the day.

"So sorry I'm late! I could have sworn there was an alarm on my phone!" Komaru spit out, trying to comb out her hair with her fingers to no avail. The shop felt less desolate now, the three of them working together to get the shop open for the day. Just as Sayaka was about to mark Shuichi as absent for the day and scold him over the phone, the door opened once again.

"Another faulty alarm?" Sayaka said, once again not looking up from the coffee machine.

"Yeah, how'd you guess?" Shuichi said, his hair ruffled under his hat. Dark circles were formed under his eyes, sweat forming on his brow.

"Ah, just a lucky guess!" Sayaka giggled, continuing to fiddle with the buttons on the coffee machine. She slowly strolled over towards the door, and flipped the sign to open. It was a Thursday, so traffic was expected to be slow into the coffee shop except for the occasional regular.

Right on cue, as the clock read 7:35, the bell chimed above the door. Sayaka shot the boy that just entered a smile. She could recognize that face anywhere, as he was one of their most consistent regulars. Sporting a brown jacket and brown corduroys, his white jacket was as fluffy and unkempt as ever.

"Right on time Nagito! You want the usual?" She called out, already starting the brew.

Sitting down, He nervously smiled, calling back, "If that's ok with you guys! I don't want to be too much of a bother." He snagged a book out of the bookshelf, settling into the armchair.

"It's always fine with us! Just say the word." Chihiro meekly responded, not even sure if the other boy could hear him. A soft smile spread across Chihiro's lips after getting a nod from Nagito. Chihiro passed Nagito the drink, the latter thanking the former and skipping over to his armchair.

The day went on as per normal, the regulars passing through on occasion to grab a coffee or chat about their day. Rantaro told Shuichi about his recent travels, the boats and planes painting a picture of the globe. Gundham told them of the adventures of his hamsters, the new litter sitting in his scarf, which particularly excited Komaru.

The clock chimed 4:30, when the door's bell rang once again, much to the surprise of the employees. A new figure was standing there, her brightly colored hair and socks standing out from the pastels and dark woods of the shop.

Shooting the cashier a smile, she happily called out, "Is this Hope's Coffee and Tea?"

Sayaka was startled, but happily responded, "Yep! I'm about to go on break, tell Komaru your order when you're ready!"

"Is it ok if I sit with you during your break? I haven't introduced myself yet though, my name is Ibuki Mioda!" she happily responded, unknowing of how odd the question is.

Taken off guard, Sayaka simply nodded and said, "Of course! My name is Sayaka Maizono, where would you like to sit?"

Ibuki shot her head up, pulling her hands to her face and excitedly saying, "How about over there," pointing to a small two person table in the back.

"Sure," Sayaka responded, "Why not? What would you like to drink, I'll get Komaru working on it."

"Hot cocoa!" Ibuki responded, looking extremely excited for a reason unknown to Sayaka. Komaru nodded, happily grabbing chocolate and milk. The two sat down, Sayaka snuggling into the soft beige armchair.

"So, whats it like around town? Ibuki just moved here, and she wants to learn more about the area!"

Sayaka was a little confused about the speech pattern, but decided to go along with it, responding cheerily, "Oh there's not too much to say, we're just a small town in the middle of nowhere so there's really only about 30 of us around here. You actually just missed Toko Fukawa, the romance novelist! She lives here, but doesn't seem to like interacting with all of us."

Ibuki was intrigued, smiling a wide smile. "I just moved here from Los Angeles! I wanted to be a musician, but that didn't end up turning out too well..." she said, looking slightly embarrassed about the failure.

However, Sayaka seemed very interested, and prompted her to go on. Despite the supposed failure, she had never encountered a musician, let alone one living in her hometown. As they continued to chat about their towns, the two felt a little bit closer.

"One hot cocoa for a Miss Ibuki?" Komaru shouted, happily gesturing to Ibuki to grab her drink. Ibuki waved at Sayaka as she walked over, her cheeks tinged a soft pink. Ibuki sat down, starting to settle into a calm conversation when a sudden loud noise startled the duo. A loud rock song was now playing, coming from Ibuki's phone. Looking embarrased, she grabbed her phone only to suddenly shoot out of her seat.

"Ibuki needs to take this, can you wait for me?" she hurriedly said, already standing up.

Sayaka nodded, before quickly yelling, "Hey Ibuki! Wanna trade numbers, incase you have to leave early?"

Ibuki happily exclaimed, "Of course! Have this, just shoot me a text when you get off of work."

She handed Sayaka a small business card, reading: Ibuki Mioda, 408-xxx-xxxx, LA Musician. Sayaka giggled, as it was obvious Ibuki had really tried to get herself a startup. Ibuki parted ways with Sayaka, saying that she had some urgent business to attend to.

That night, as Sayaka was sitting on her porch, she remembered what Ibuki had told her about shooting a text. She quickly typed something out, hoping it didnt sound too overbearing.

hey there! Its me, sayaka, from the coffee shop. hows your night going?
