The morning came too soon, the sunlight dripping like honey, resting on top of the sleeping pair. Dust was floating in the air, an accompaniment to the soft snoring floating in the wind. The heat was suffocating, the late summer air laying over them. An alarm went off, reading simply 6:30 AM. Dawn was here, the sun rising over the horizon. A snoring Ibuki lay softly on the bed, Sayaka getting up and getting ready for work.
Sayaka was sure today would be orientation, the others scurrying to keep up with the newbie's energy. She was sitting in the kitchen on the phone, the silvery metal of the house-phone shining in the morning light. Breakfast was sitting on the stove while she talked, the sausages sizzling and popping away.
Curtains were fluttering in the wind, and Sayaka was deep in thought. As the morning continued on, the other girl getting out of bed and doing her morning routine as per usual, she pondered. Why had she let this strange girl into her house? Moreover, why was she beginning to like her? She was her opposite, but she had experience in a field the desired so desperately to experience. She was her dream, yet she was so different. Loud and unruly, she ran around the house laughing when Sayaka was so stressed over work. And yet, she still adored her. She could maybe even learn to love her.
She finally picked up the phone, calling in to let her co-workers know that there would be a new employee soon.
"Hello, this is Hope's Sugar Coffee + Teas, how may I help you this morning?" Shuichi answered, his voice wavering slightly. Sayaka could almost feel his anxiety through the phone, but simply laughed it off. He was getting used to it, she could tell. When he first joined, he could barely even pick up the phone without freaking out.
Sayaka quickly responded, a happy ring to her voice. "Hey there Shu! It's just me. Just calling in to let you know that we have a new recruit coming in tomorrow. Her name is Ibuki, she's the girl from the other day. I hope you understand!"
Shuichi let out a sigh, the relief in his tone evident to even the untrained ear. "Of course! I'm actually only on call today, today's Saturday. Y'know, our day off?"
She giggled, forgetting her woes. "I must've forgot! It's ok though, It'll be nice to spend some more time with the new girl. Talk to you tomorrow Shu!"She hung up, the tone signaling the house to go quiet. It was an early morning, the soft tones of the house lit up by the bright sunlight. Ibuki had gone quiet now, and was softly settled on the couch, cat in arms. Dark fur was sat on her outfit, seemingly having changed since the previous day. She was adorned in soft pastels, the cotton draping over her body as she lie, purring with the cat. The cat was sleeping, a dark ball of fluff that was named Coal, but Sayaka tends to just call him Bastard.
Ibuki was sleeping now, soft snores coming from her resting place. Sayaka let out a soft laugh, turning back towards the kitchen. A small pot was placed on the stove, a simple syrup making its humble beginnings. Leaving it to thicken up, Sayaka drifted across the room to continue the makings of lunch. Ice, lemons, and simple syrup were combined in perfect harmony, and tea biscuits were laid on the counter. A single sprig of lavender was placed in the jug, completing the scene.
The backyard was warm, the yellowing grass and iron-wrought fence completing the area. Weeds were springing up out of the concrete porch, and one could see grass and fields for miles beyond the fence. She was on the outskirts of town, the area softening and blurring the farther you looked. She set the lemonade and biscuits on an iron table sitting by the door, letting them settle perfectly on the circular center.
The snoring could still be heard, softly flowing through the air as Sayaka took in the warm summers air. She had just graduated, barely an adult now. The day was warm, and with Ibuki sleeping inside, she felt like she had a purpose. She was fulfilled, whether she knew it or not. The day was new, the sky blue and birds chirping, and she was whole. Not because she'd found her other half though, as she was herself. She was her, and she felt at home in her hometown for the first time in forever.
A yawn could be heard from inside, soft mewling and coos accompanying the awakening. Ibuki stood up, stretching her back out stick straight. Sayaka could just barely see her, the back door's window being foggy and glossy. Ibuki could see her as well, and made her way out quickly.
"Sayaka! Don't you have work today? I thought you were working at the coffee shop... maybe Ibuki was wrong?" Ibuki spat out, rushing and stumbling over her words. She giggled, replying to herself, "Ohhh, Sayaka must have had a day off! It is a weekend afterall, Ibuki must have forgot."
Sayaka laughed, letting her voice ring out across the plains. "Yep, sure did have the day off! I saw that you met Bastard earlier, you guys were snuggling like old friends back there."
"You mean the cat? Did Sayaka really name her cat Bastard? That's not too nice," Ibuki responded, pouting a bit.
Sayaka was a bit taken aback, but remembered Ibukis... eccentric nature. "It's just a nickname for him, his real name is Coal! Sorry if there was any confusion, I'm not the best at sarcasm."
"That makes more sense! He was so sweet, he was so soft and warm, so Ibuki must have fallen asleep when he did!" Ibuki responded, her mood suddenly shifting back to her outgoing self.
Ibuki sat herself at the table without invitation, almost as if she had lived here forever. She smiled, her face beaming with positive energy. Sayaka slid a cup and a biscuit over to her, pouring the lavender lemonade.
They sat silently, the sun blazing overhead. Clothes were hanging in the overgrown yard, fluttering softly in the wind. The rolling plains and hills were a backdrop to their bonding, as they talked, laughed, and ate together. The wind picked up, the sole tree in the yard starting to wave at the pair. They were together, talking as naturally as friends who had known each other since birth.
Clouds rolled in as they laughed, the day coming to its peak. They felt whole, and they knew this was where they were meant to be. With each other, coming to learn more about each other than they knew about themselves.
