In the end Louis knew what he wanted to do, he knew the whole time what he was going to do and that scared him. He wanted to try to be friends again, to let him and Zayn in to his world. He didn't want to cause the same pain that he had endured happen to Harry. Both boys knew that if Harry or Zayn messed up that that was it. Louis wouldn't try again, he wouldn't let that happen.
It took time for their friendship to be a friendship again. Louis was always guarded, hesitant to any offer Harry through out there. Harry patiently waited and kept trying, even after Louis turned down his offer to come to his house for the eighth time in a row.
What mattered was that they were both trying to make it work, even Zayn was trying to make it work. Harry was angry at the man for a while, but couldn't stick to it because it was due to him that he has his two best fiends back in his life. Zayn was just glad he wasn't pouting and moping around anymore. He also didn't mind the company that came along with the two of them being friends again.
Liam didn't stay in town longer than he was required to. That didn't mean that he didn't want to. Finally seeing his cousin open up and return back to how he used to be was amazing. He went back to his school, with a great story in mind, unsure of how he wanted to frame it, but hopeful for the future and what it may bring. He left with a promise to come back as soon as he could and a threat that they all better still be friends.

Liam leaving only made Harry and Louis' relationship stronger. They began to hang out all the time, even if it wasn't much outside of school due to Harry's dismays. That didn't stop the feeling that grew for Louis, only intensified as time kept going. Louis felt it too and that scared him. All the plans he made that short time ago were thrown out the window. Shredded and thrown in the gutters, having never existed. He was concerned with how strongly he felt about their relationship and with all the possibilities that could be.
But Louis was leaving in four days and Harry couldn't stand it. He felt like the other boy was avoiding him, acting weird when they hung out and was less talkative too. Harry tried not to think too much into it, always hoping for the best when it came to Louis these days.
"I'm really excited to see where all of this goes. We have something good here but I think we can make it better." Harry looked out at the light on the street, content with where they were in life at the moment, but always wanting more. His shoulders rested back far enough the bush with Louis' and his hands an inch away too.
"Harry..." Louis stopped, took a minute to breath and clear his throat before starting up again. Guilt was eating at his stomach as he thought about what he was doing, but he knew it was the right choice. There was nothing more he wanted in this moment than Harry.
"I think we should just be friends for now. So, much has happened and I don't want to ruin any relationship we have because of how I've been acting and I'm leaving in a few days anyways."
Harry sat in silence for a moment, face of st, the quiet building anxiety in Louis, he didn't like how big the silence was. Finally, Harry sighed and looked back up at him, and to Louis' surprise, he offered a soft smile.
"I get it, I mean I actually don't, but I hear where you're coming from. This doesn't mean we're over, just paused. I'll still be here until you're ready to hit play again, you know that, right?"
"Yeah, I don't want things to be over. I just want to get through my own stuff before ruining what we've built all over again. I think we both should, before even thinking of moving forward. We have so much time in the future to deal with things."
"Then friends it is." Harry offered his hand to shake on it. A grateful smile erupted on Louis' face at the gesture and he knew that this would never be the end of them. Harry would always fight for Louis and what they have, even when it didn't look like there would be a positive outcome.
He couldn't help but do so. Louis meant the world to him and they would always be in each others lives, in a relationship or in a friendship. Both of them knew this, even though it took Louis longer to realize. He couldn't deny the want to have Harry in his life and he wasn't going to.
They were going to take it one day at a time from here.
