my fingernails tapped my suitcase with growing anticipation. the ticket i printed out was lying on my lap as i sat in the furthest corner in the airport near my gate.

"12:00am"

"were r u?"

my phone buzzed awake. it was ronnie. judging by the lack of grammar, i knew right away. i picked my phone up, pressing the text message hesitantly.

"bed. you?"

i quickly replied, wondering if she'd pick up on my lie. she always did. that was just her. it was like she had a lie-detector built in her brain. that, and i wasn't much of a liar. i wished i could lie like her. she could sell a ketchup popsicle to a lady in white gloves.

"cruisin da town looking for trouble. wanna go to vera's?"

i smiled bitterly.

"you won't find much trouble there"

"ya probably. trying to get her to smoke with me"

"don't ruin the poor thing's brain now"

"i ruin everybody's brains"

"not mine"

"yeah right carol your horribly in love with me!"

"vibez y2k lolz"

"so you wanna go?"

i frowned.

"can't. grounded lol"

"bitch. text u later"

two heart emojis and three middle fingers. that was ronnie. perfect way of describing her personality, too.

once she stopped texting me, i was amazed at how she just gave up. usually, she would be able to convince me to do something with her. if she knew where i was going, she'd be on the next plane just because she could. she had an alarming amount of money for how much she spent it on drugs and that sort of thing.

my parents always questioned my choice in friends, but i thought they were great. they were. but i never drank or smoked anything. ronnie knew i wasn't like that, but she always offered. her and whatever boy she had over would corner one another and make out while vera and i would laugh and watch them, occasionally commentating quietly.

and now here i was, in the airport, about to get a plane to another country just because someone in my dream told me to.

fuck.
