I watched the back of Paris' head as she spoke into her iPhone. She was talking quietly, and I couldn't quite make out what she was saying.
Odd.
But I ignored the fact that Paris was acting strangely, and hurried home. My great-grandpa would be home soon.
Edward Dae was a interesting man. He had been my best friend, since, forever. I don't know when I hadn't adored him, looked up to him. Since I was old enough to understand, he had read me stories every day at night. Even now, when I'm sixteen, he sits at the end of my bed and reads. When Paris is on one of her trips, I am always with him. I'm closer to him than my parents.
"Hails?" I heard.
"I'm home!" I replied, hugging my great-grandpa with one arm and snatching a bag of pretzels out of our old ivory pantry. "How was work, Beatle?" That's what he asked me to call him. Beatle. He adored the Beatles.
"It was good. I saw your latest album," Oh yeah. That's another thing about Beatle. He had been my first Instagram follower, even before Paris. Yeah, my great-grandpa had Instagram. "In the second top, the green turtleneck, you got the camera tilted wrong. I'll help you with that later. But for now, we haven't finished the Hunger Games."
I laughed. "I love you, Beatle." I hugged him as he tugged the famous Suzanne Collins novel out of his... I dunno. Inside ginormous coat jacket?
"I love you too, Prim. I mean, er, Hails."
Paris' POV
As I walked away from Hailey, I started to talk to James, my...um...erm... boyfriend? Hailey has absolutely no idea about him. I don't want to tell her. She's...umm...really protective. I know that she doesn't want me to get hurt, but I need to learn from my mistakes.
"Hello?" I said into the pink-cased iPhone I was holding to my ear.
"Oh, hey Paris. It's me, James. I was wondering if you wanted to meet at the Afternoon Delight Cafe?"
"Sure, see you there," I said into the phone.
"Bye."
"Bye,' I said and hung up.
