opposites attract [steve]

"dustin are you coming or what?" i yelled out to my younger brother. he was taking forever, as per usual, not being able to get off the phone to suzie.

suzie was dustin's girlfriend and like everyone else, at first i wasn't convinced she existed.

then he got that tower working and can never get off the damn thing all day. i can still hear the dreaded words 'dustybun' and 'suzypoo' haunting me at night.

"alright give me a goddamn second y/n." dustin yells back as he stumbles into the living room after exchanging sickening goodbyes with his girlfriend.

i had been stood at the front door waiting for him for the past five minutes, cause he said he wanted a ride to the mall.

since i finished high school, i started working at orange julius in starcourt mall, and because i worked there, dustin took full advantage of all the rides i gave him to the mall and all the free drinks he could get.

but he always spent most of his time in the store opposite me- scoops ahoy.

steve had become his best friend, and i could always see them laughing and talking together and it made me miserable that i had to stay in my store.

yeah, i was there standing alone whilst my own brother preferred to talk to steve over me.

i mean fair enough, it was steve, but i got so bored.

dustin finally had his shoes on and we made our way to my car and started making our way towards the mall.

"what takes you so long? all you have to do is say goodbye and then hang up. how do you make it last that long every time?" i started complaining to my younger brother.

"excuse me, y/n, but i like to treat my girlfriend nicely. it's not like you have a boyfriend." he fires back at me.

"ohh, you crossed a line there, dustin." i joked with mock offence. but, the boy had a point.

even though hearing them talk to each other about science all day with gross nicknames for each other was horrible to hear, at least he actually had a girlfriend. and he was my little brother, so that's a bit of a kick in the teeth.

pulling up to the car park, we saw steve walking at the same time as us towards the entrance of starcourt.

steve spots us, and does a jog-type walk over and does his weird handshake with dustin.

but as he goes to look at me, he starts to look nervous and blushes a little bit, then eventually says hi.

i've always had a little crush on steve, but not like a crush crush. like i thought he was attractive but i never intended on doing anything about it.

we haven't really spoken much even though we were in the same grade at school.

the only times we do speak is usually when i see him before or after work, but dustin was always there too.

the three of us all enter the mall, and i departed from them once we got to scoops ahoy.

i hated my job, it sucked. at least i was getting paid, although not as much as i would like.

resuming my normal place behind the counter, i started taking orders of juices and began my tedious day of work all over again.

when the store was quiet and pretty much void of customers, i was forced to just sit miserably staring at steve, robin and dustin all talking and having fun.

while y/n remained in orange julius, dustin had been talking to steve and robin but then left them in scoops ahoy to go to a different store with his friends.
