Flashback

Maddie walked into Monet’s and waved at Clay. “Hey Clay.” She leans in and whispers in his ear. “What are you doing with Jeff Atkins?”

Clay looked around before he turned his head towards her. "How did you know I was here?"

"I went to the Crestmont thinking you had a shift but Hannah told me you were here. Though she didn’t tell me you were on some kind of study date." She looked between both the boys until Clay finally spoke up.

“Well if you can't tell I’m tutoring him right now.” He said as he pointed at the textbooks in front of both of them.

She started giggling thinking it was a joke until she looked at the both of the boys that looked confused. “Wait, you're not kidding." She punched Clay in the shoulder. "I knew you were smart but I didn't think you could talk enough to teach someone.”

He glared at her. “Shouldn’t you be at practice?”

She sat besides him. “Honestly I just wanted an excuse to get out of Track practice. Right now he thinks I’m with my grandmother.”

Jeff looked up from his textbook. “Wait, you do sports.”

“Yeah I'm in Track and Field and Cross Country… Even though the school could give two shits about our funding." She scratches the back of her head. "Uhm is it that strange?”

“No not at all.” He leans back in his chair. “I guess without the varsity jacket it just confused me.”

She rubs the back of her neck and looks away from them. “Yeah I guess I never really liked to wear it at school.”

“Well I think you would look amazing wearing it.” He elbows her. “And I bet Justin would love that too.” He pushes his hot chocolate in front of her. “Take this. I’m gonna order something else.”

“No, you don’t have to do th.” She stopped mid sentence realizing he wasn’t gonna listen to her. She looks down at the cup and sighs before she takes a drink.

He raised his eyebrows. “Really you're gonna actually drink that.”

She places the drink back on the table. “What? I’m not going to waste a perfectly good drink.”

Once Jeff was a good distance away Clay looked at her. “Wait Justin? You really still like him after what he did?”

She puts a hand through her hair. “What did he do exactly?”

“The photo of him and Hannah that he sent to over half the school.” He got on his phone and showed her the picture that went up Hannah’s skirt. “You didn’t see it?”

She quickly lowers the phone. "He wasn’t the one who sent it. Zach it was Bryce.”

He leaned in on the table. “And you really think he's telling the truth?”

She nods. “Yeah I do. Just because that happened to her doesn't mean it's gonna happen to me."

“You say that now but when he breaks your heart I won't be surprised."

She rolled her eyes and put a hand through her hair. “You just overreact too much.”

He shakes his head. “Yeah and you don't react enough.”

She raised her hand in surrender. “I’m just saying, if you're allowed to have a crush on a weird girl I think I’m allowed to like Justin.”

“What's wrong with Hannah?” He asked her.

She shrugs. “I don't know how to explain it. There's just something odd about her is all.”

He tilts his head. “Something odd about her?”

“She just asked me a weird question that caught me off guard.”+

“What did she ask you that was so weird?”

“She just…” She glances away from him. “She just asked me about my lady parts which… I don't know I wasn't comfortable so I left as soon as she stopped talking.”

“Well can you at least try to act like friends.”

“I can't make any promises." She looked up at him to see his glare. "Okay Okay I will if you stop complaining about Justin."

Jeff comes back with a hot chocolate of his own. "You will what?"

She leans back in her chair. "We were just talking about how I'll try to be nicer to him but look at him. He has such a punchable face it's so hard not to think about it."

“I do not." He said as he slapped her arm.

She smiles and nods. “Oh you definitely do. Don’t you think that too Jeff?"

He rolls his eyes. "You two sound like kids."

"Haven’t you heard Jeff?" She puts a hand on Clays head and messes up his hair. "Best friends are supposed to make fun of each other till the end of time.”

“Oh really I never got the memo? When were ever taught that in school?” Clay grumbled as he swatted Maddie away.

“Well then that sucks to be you Clay.” She stands up and grabs her cup. “Well I’m gonna let you two get back to your little study date.”

Clay looked up a"So you can go talk to Justin."

She crouches down so she was eye level to Clay. "Here's the thing Clay I know where you sleep at night so you shouldn't test me."

"You wouldn't." He says shaking his head.

"I wouldn't? Hmm I guess I'll have to remember that when Laine invites me over."

"Oh so now your gonna use my own parents against me."

"Says the one who told me last year that my brother was gonna protect you from me."

"That's a completely different thing. You want to get to my house through my parents. I just wanted someone athletic to protect me from your punches."

"Whatever."
