I broke his gaze, opting to pace to the kitchen to avoid him.

Something was off. Why was the atmosphere between us so... Cordial? Was this normal?!

I breathed in, steeling my nerves as I poured out a glass of water.

"Do you want anything? Coffee, biscuits or would you prefer water? " I said, hoping I sounded less panicked than I was.

" I don't feel very hungry. Well...not for food. "

Why was I so anxious again after his words? How abnormal. I'd better chat with my private physician about my irrational reaction. A complete deviation from my demeanor would not be beneficial towards the summit.

Also, what does he mean? How long is this cryptic bullshit gonna drag on for?

I'd better feign ignorance, see how far I can take this.
I blinked slowly.

Once.
Twice.
Thrice.

I grinned slowly, beckoned him towards the coach in the centre of my office, and sat down unceremoniously.

"What did you want to discuss in regards to the routes? "

He looked at first excited, then amused upon hearing my words. "I'm not particularly interested in the trade routes, the memorandum I sent you ought to be enough." he said wryly.

"Then let's first discuss your flagrant flouting of the 4967 lufera convention. I had wanted to wait until you settled down first, but we're short a conversation topic right now. "

He froze in in his seat.

" Why else do you think I called Scolaris to this year's Imperium g5 summit? You are gaining notoriety among the packs at an alarming rate. They implored the Empire to intervene. " I pressed.

I pulled my mask off, retaking control of the situation, as I fell into my natural environment. Despite the loss of comfort, the cooler sensation on my face, as a breeze hit my face. My training kicked in naturally, as I reigned in my wolf's; and therefore my own, most undesirable aspects.

Since childhood, I had been impaired, the result of a cursed coupling. Less authoritative than my half-brother, less inclined for academics than his sister and with less parental love than my peers. How much harder had I worked to get to where I was today? Sometimes I wish that I had interacted with my birth father more. Before he had succumbed to the whims of my fath...

NO.

Alpha octavius.

Yes.

She shook her head, her memories dissipating as she focused on him.

Her mate.

He looked far less confident, his eyes far more shifty and his lips... Looked considerably parched.

I grabbed a nearby pitcher and two cups. Filling each one in turn. I handed him a glass before giving him one of the smiles I had spent hours in the mirror perfecting.

Just like in show and tell for comportment classes.

Wait.

Was it weird?

Too much teeth?

Did I have stiff facial muscles?!

Ugh.

I scanned his expressions to search for tells.

Zip.

Zero.

Nada.

His features were a blank slate. The haunted gaze of a true leader; forged in the fire of war. One who had faced countless trials and tribulations with his men.

A mate who could lead Imperium by my side perhaps?

Laira knew at least, he had definitely seen some shit.

The real question, was if he had built a tolerance, or had enough of it.

Bullshit, I meant.
