I stare at the ground, not knowing what to think. Shouldn't I be celebrating right now because Brittney and I- No... I can't... Mom... How? She was... healthy...
My throat constricts, making it hard to breathe. Tears flood down my face. "You knew, didn't you?" I say. And even though my voice sounds like I'm choking, it is full of anger; all of it directed at my sister.
"Yes," her voice sounding timid, hurt almost. "She's not exactly dead yet, but she will be soon. She wants to talk with you," she turns to Brittney, "both of you."
"But... she doesn't know about Brittney..."my meow shaky in my mouth.
"Mom does want to talk to her, Mom just doesn't know it yet."
"How-?" I ask, wanting to say more... to scold Emerald for not telling me... but nothing more comes out.
Emerald, knowing what I mean, says "it was dad."
