When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone has passed tonight…
Don't you dare look out your window
Darling everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold on to this lullaby
Even when the music's gone, gone
-Safe and sound by Taylor Swift-
On fire
On my blood-encrusted palm was a cylindrical glass container in breadth and length approximately the size of my thumb. A cork had enclosed the top, and inside was a transparent liquid filled to the brim.
For the first time in a long time, a smile that rose from my heart curved my lips.
The moonlight waned slowly, until it was nothing but a dim ray of light.
Clasping the tube tightly between my interlocked palms, I dropped down, my knees giving way.
“Thank you, Your Majesty!” I choked out.
Thank the ancestors of Cevic.
It finally seemed like I could breathe.
“It is the cure,” said Rezia in wonder.
James smiled. “You did it, Jamison.”
Jàs went down on one knee, inclining his head. “Congratulations, my prince.”
I rose to my feet, held his hand and raised him up.
“We brought our bags. There could be anything that helps. Now we just have one more step left. To go back to Cevic with this successfully.”
Rezia’s face was glowing. “In order to do that, we have to contact the royalty, specifically Princess Isha in order to allow the connection of the teleportation.”
James tilted his head. “Can’t you contact her from Earth?”
“There is no equipment here that allows us to.” Dread spread through me like splinters of ice.
Too focused on obtaining the cure, I hadn’t thought of it in advance.
Queen Sakira, who attempted to hinder us from Princess Isha and obtaining the cure the most actively, was not in Cevic, but that didn’t mean the opposing ministers and lords were any debilitated from cutting the connection between us.
By now, royal power would have hit the ground.
“Ancestors of Cevic, help us,” whispered Rezia.
Just when the last syllable escaped her lips, light spilled down on me. It didn’t hit only me, but also all of us- Jàs, Rezia and I, all of us excluding James.
