"Pssst Connie, wake up."
I was brought out of my light slumber when I heard Sarah's timid voice. Propping myself up on my elbows, I slightly opened my eyes to take in the surrounding darkness of the room.
"Uncle Tommy called, he wanted dad and it sounded serious"
After rubbing my eyes and pinching my nose, I sat up and looked at Joel's empty space on the bed. The blankets were still neatly folded as If he'd never been there. Strange.
"Is he downstairs?" I asked causing her to shake her head. "Put your shoes on, we're going next door and I don't want to leave you by yourself."
She hurried out of the room leaving me to get changed. Luckily I was only three months along in my pregnancy and was able to wiggle into the last pair of jeans that still fit. I left my pyjama tank top on, threw on Joel's button-up that was left at the end of the bed and went to find Sarah.
As I walked into the living room, I noticed she was watching the tv we'd forgotten to turn off earlier. I grabbed the remote to switch it off when she placed her hand on my wrist to stop me.
We've received reports that victims afflicted with the infection show signs of increased aggression and- We need to move everybody out of here now. There's a gas leak. Hey-Move! Get out of here!
Our heads whipped towards the patio doors to catch the exact moment an inferno raised from within the city. What the hell?
"Uh...Connie?" Sarah looked at me for an answer but I had no explanation.
"The sooner we find your Dad the better." We pushed our way into the office when Joel charged in through the door. He slammed it closed and turned to us.
"Are you two okay?" he asked whilst rummaging around the bottom draw. He pulled out the gun case causing me and Sarah to immediatly tense up.
"Yeah..." Sarah replied.
"Has anyone come in here?"
"No. Who would come in here?"
"-Joel, you're kinda freaking us out. Is everything okay?" I interjected.
"It's the Coopers. Somethin' ain't right with 'em. I think they're sick."
"What kind of sick?" Sarah panicked.
Suddenly someone flung themselves at the thin piece of glass protecting us from whatever was going on out there. Jim Cooper was pounding against it with his full weight forcing Joel into pushing the two of us behind him. I searched for anything to use to defend ourselves and noticed the Hello Kitty baseball bat I jokingly bought as a 'home defence mechanism'.
