It had been about two months since Dave put Roman out and the media was in a frenzy. The chemistry between Dave and Roman was off on the field, the social media videos of them together had stopped coming and the world was dying to know why, especially after TMZ got hold of a video from the day Roman moved out, showing him throwing his bags in his car and speeding off.
"You ready?" I asked him.
"Yeah," he sighed. "I mean, for the game and press conference, not your brother."
Dave started doing little things to antagonize our relationship after I sent him a picture of my foot on Roman's chest from our bath one day after they had practice. He'd pay groupies to go the tabloids and say they were with Roman one night, or he'd try to get a video of him at the strip club or something. He'd even tried to get him drunk at a few parties so he could send in hookers. And it failed every time. We used to want to go to the media about it, and embarrass him, but we didn't want to cause any more bad press than he was already causing and we really didn't want to risk him outing us. It had been about eight months and it was going so great. We didn't wanna make it public until we'd gone though the cycle of everything. We didn't want our first major fight, or issue to have to be handled while trying to entertain the media, or have it be blasted to the world, and have to try and think for ourselves through that.
The ride to the game was silent, besides Future blasting from the radio. I dropped Roman off at the player's entrance, then drove across the street to park at the gas station. I discreetly gave the clerk two hundred bucks and a ticket for the first playoff game for letting me park there. On game days, I didn't get to work out with Roman like every other morning, so to make sure I didn't slack off, I would park across the street from the stadium and jog over. Once I got to our sky box, I'd freshen up in the bathroom, change into one of the t-shirt dresses he loved to see me in and then watch the game. Afterwards, I'd jog back across the street and then meet him at the press conference.
It ate Dave alive seeing me at the press meetings because he knew I was there for Roman and not him. Truthfully, I hated these things, but Roman really loved having me there this one time I stayed and I've been here for him ever since for the last six games. I think it was a male pride thing... something about having me there among all the other wives and girlfriend made him so proud. I could tell in the way he sat up and projected his voice.
"Riley?"
I looked up to see my ex and former Chiefs Linebacker, DJ Alexander standing over me with his jaw dropped. I smiled and stood up to hug him. We dated for a few months a couple years back, but the minute Dave found out, he started acted funny towards him. One night he followed us up to Colorado, on some super crazy shit. DJ didn't notice him until I pointed him out After the weekend was over and we were headed home, I pointed Dave out to him in traffic and we decided to call it quits. My mind wasn't as strong back then to tell him about himself, so it was the easier move.
"Donell, hey!" I smiled as I stood up. "How the hell are you? I missed the whole draft slash trade season. Where are you now?"
"I'm great, I'm in Seattle now. I'm here in town for the week, why don't we do lunch and... uh... catch up sometime?"
"I'd love that. I've missed you so much these last few months stranger. Here, give me your phone so I can give you my number. It's changed since you were last in town."
"What you doing now?" He asked as he pulled his phone out. "Hopefully not dating anymore teammates of Dave's."
"Well," I laughed. "Eh, you know I'm hard headed. That's all I'm going to say."
"Which teammate? It's the new corner back isn't it?"
"Am I that predictable?" I laughed.
"No, but you do have a type."
