Camila awoke to the foreign feeling of cool sheets. Groggily, she extended her arms out and around her body, aimless grasping the air for any presence of the girl who had comforted her the previous night. She felt bad. Almost like a burden to Lauren. Camila's mind wandered back to the words Lauren had uttered to her only hours ago. How she genuinely cared about Camila, and no longer viewed protecting her as another pay check. However, Camila still couldn't figure out what Laurens true intentions were. The older girl intrigued her. There was something about her that found Camila continuously gravitating towards the girl.
The first thing Camila noticed when she pulled herself out from under the covers was the bitter cold atmosphere that seeminly swallowed the room whole. Sitting up, she reached for the water on the bedside nightstand, taking a sip to sooth her throat. Camila always found herself waking up with the occasional sore throat, which could last hours into the morning. It's one of the other things she despised about herself. Stumbling over to her bag, she quickly changed into some grey sweatpants, black converse, and a black champion hoodie. Whilst brushing her teeth, Camila heard the door to their room open. She leant back out of the bathroom, poking her head out, toothbrush in hand, to see who might have entered.
In strolled Lauren, also dressed in sweats, but was rocking a pair of Vans Sk8-hi's. It was a casual change to Laurens usually tough attire that Camila was acquainted to seeing.
"You know, in the short time we have spent together, I don't think I've ever seen you wear anything that casual" Camila loudly muttered in Laurens direction, mouth full of toothpaste.
Laurens head snapped towards her direction, seemingly startled at the younger girls presence. Her expression relaxed when she realised that comment had come from none other than Camila's mouth.
"It's cold and dewy outside, so I wanted to wear something more casual." Lauren nonchalantly countered as she hastily shuffled through a washbag beside her bed, pulling out some gum.
The girls didn't speak much as they both got ready for the day ahead. Lauren made up the beds, and Camila tidied the rest the room, both engulphed in utter silence.
"We should get going, don't wanna miss breakfast" Lauren gently tugged on Camila's sleeve, the latter humming as she started to follow Lauren out the door.
"Wait" Camila broke the silence between them as they were headed for the stairs. Lauren turned around, patiently waiting for Camila to continue. "T-thankyou for last night" she stuttered. "I mean..well, you know, helping me sleep and all."
"Well, that's what I'm here for right?" Lauren huffed, gently taking Camila's hands in her own. The small difference in height forcing Lauren to lower her gaze to meet Camila's soft brown orbs. "I suppose so—" Camila trailed off, lowering her gaze, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks. An uncomfortable silence settled between the two girls, Camila's hands still in Laurens gentle grasp, and their eye contact still broken.
"Girls!" Ella-May called out from the kitchen snapping both girls back into reality. "I can hear you squabbling up there, hurry up your breakfast is getting cold!"
Camila let go of Laurens hands, hastily scurrying past her and down the stairs leaving Lauren to her own devices, still submerged in the prior moment between the two. Camila was too embarrassed to say another word to the older girl. Lauren stood there for a few brief moments to recollect and re-compose herself. She wasn't sure why holding Camila's hands had such an effect on her, but she couldn't help but ignore the foreign fuzzy feeling at the pit of her stomach. She'd never felt this before, it was peculiar and intriguing.
Sheriff Roosevelt had already left for work by the time the 3 had awoken. Lauren joined Camila and Niall at the table and Ella-May served them breakfast, but didn't eat with them. Camila ate in silence and Lauren didn't say a word. Even Niall seemed subdued. They threw their bags in the Charger and went back inside to pay. Ella-May gave Lauren a handwritten receipt and walked them to the door and they stood there, waiting for someone to say something. Ella-May was the one to puncture the quiet.
