Demi's POV

Layla and her mother said their goodbye's, both embracing each other in a deep hug.  I smiled at how happy they both looked; it had been 12 years since they had last spoken and here they were, meeting again under the strangest of circumstances.  As I watched them, I reflected on my own relationship with my mother.

After the divorce, she left, apparently moving oversea's.  Since that day, I had received one birthday card from her on my 10th birthday, but nothing more. (Probably due to the fact that we had since moved across country countless times). Watching Layla and her mom rekindle their relationship made me yearn my own mother.  I wanted to put things between us straight, and get my own answers to the list of questions I had built up over the years.  As much as I resented her for leaving, I knew that she, just like Layla's mother, probably had her reasons and I wanted to find out the truth.  As I watched the pair before me detach and part ways, I made a mental note to remember to make an attempt to restart communication between my estranged mother and I.

As Layla approached me, a huge smile was painted across her face, and I couldn't help but copy her expression.  Her smile was addictive, and I couldn't get enough of it.  Having seen her at lowest, seeing her happy brought me so much joy and I felt my heart flutter as I reached out my hand to take hers.  Her hands were soft as they interlocked with mine, and I felt complete.

"Let's head back, it's getting late" she smiled.

We made our way out of the coffee shop, the bell on the door chiming as we exited, and we were once again greeted by the icy breeze that lingered acoss the city.  As we made our way along the sidewalk, I looked up at the looming skyscrapers around us.  It was now approaching 1am, yet the city was still buzzing.

"So..do you and your mom have another meeting planned?"  I darted my eyes across to Layla's face, her cheeks a rosy red from the cold air around us.

"I gave her my number. She said she'll call me in the morning so we can sort something out. I just don't want to rush things, you know?  Today has been a long and eventful day and I want to take things between us one step at a time".

"I'm really proud of you"

"Thank you so much, Demi. You mean the world to me"

"Likewise"

She giggled. "Now let's get back, you've got a big day tomorrow!"

Layla's POV

7.00am.  Demi's alarm shrieked out from her bedside table, making me jump.  I had only had a few hours sleep last night, subsequently due to my over thinking about the events that had occured the day before.  I looked over at Demi in the bed beside me.  Her dark hair fell delicately over  her face, and she looked beautiful in the morning sunshine.  I carefully slid out of bed and crept over to her.

"Wakey wakey sleepy head" I whispered in her ear.  The corners of her mouth curled just slightly, before her eyes flicked open, and her arms quickly snatched my shoulders, pulling me down on the bed.  She laughed that contagious laugh, and I couldn't help but laugh alongside her.  Her big chocolate eyes stared into mine, and in that moment I felt my body turn to jelly.  Her hands reached up to cup my cheeks, pulling my face closer to hers.  I could feel her breath on my face as she smirked at me, her eyes glancing down at my lips before reconnecting again with mine.  It was me that made the first move.  I pushed my lips against hers, and I felt her smile as she bit down on my bottom lip.
