Greek letters (alpha, beta, omega, zeta etc) - here known as Temporals - are used as classification of people, separated according to their date and time of birth. They are expected to behave in certain ways based on the class they're assigned to. Temporals are seen to have a greater connection to the overall persona of an individual. Most of the time, they 'fit well'. But there are individuals who feel like they're not what they've been told they are.

Society has viewed this classification very seriously for a long time. But things are changing, and people have become more accepting of individuals who do not identify with their temporals. Jobs that were once typical to certain temporals are now seen to be taken up by others without being judged.

Society is also divided in clans, each clan spanning up to the area of current day states, sometimes even more. The head of a clan is an alpha family, with at least one alpha alive at a time. But, in recent times, clans have emerged with betas, omegas and even zetas as heads.

Although jobs have become lenient in terms of hiring, marriage and family planning are still largely regulated by the Temporal system. Individuals within a class are not permitted to conceive. And while mingling between other classes are allowed, an alpha MUST marry an omega.
It's told that temporals are decided according to the time of birth, but they most likely have a genetic basis. As, only breeding between an alpha and an omega can birth another alpha. And, without an alpha/omega descendant, the current ruling family is likely to lose power over the clan.

However, alphas are also rarely born through marriage between an omega and some other class. In such cases, when the new 'lower' alpha comes of age, they're either driven out of the clan, or allowed to stay on an agreement that they'd never claim power. Or, if the ruling family has an omega descendant, the 'lower' alpha is asked to marry into the powerful family.
