Lucas' POV

Coach dragged on basketball practice for an extra 30 minutes. The only people left in the school were the basketball players. Everyone else left immediately and decided to shower at home, because who wants to spend extra time at school? My dad, however, texted me to tell me that my mom had a business meeting at our house and it'd be best if I found something to do for about 2 hours after school.

I walked to the showers, except for I didn't want the tiny showers in our boy's locker room. There was a family locker room for anyone handicapped in our school, so I wanted the big shower. (There's a girl who has heat spells every once in a while who is in a wheel chair and the only way to cool her down is to put her in a cold shower.)

Except for, when I tried to open the door, it was locked. I heard a voice from it. A beautiful, melodic voice. The voice of an angel singing an old 80's rock song by Bon Jovi. It's like they knew I was coming!

The rich tone of the voice was definitely female. I bet she was a senior at our school. Our school goes from 6th grade to 12th grade. I wondered why there would be a senior girl her at 3:30 though. Our school lets out at 3:00 and no one likes staying extra time.

I figured I shouldn't creep on this girl, (because I am a gentleman,) and so I went to the boys showers instead. I took a quick shower and quickly dried off and put on some new clothes. Dark jeans, a gray baseball tee, and some black converse. I walked out and the shower of the family bathroom had stopped, but the voice did not.

She was still singing old songs. Her voice was enchanting. I leaned my head against the doorway and just listened. I got so lost in her voice that my eyes closed and I didn't realize that she had stopped until she poked my nose.

"Howdy, partner." She mocked.

"Maya?!"

"That's my name Ranger Rick, don't wear it out." A smirk danced across her lips.

"Your voice- it's amazing." I stammered. Maya frowned at this.

"I don't sing for others."

"But you're so good!"

"But I don't sing for others. Why are you here, cowboy." She walked and I had to catch up with her.

"Practice got out late and my parents have a business meeting at my house. The real question is why are you here?"

"They shut off my water in my sad apartment. It's going to be off for days. I've been staying with Riley all week but no one was going to be home right now so I just showered here." She walked out of the school. I continued to follow.

"That stinks."

"I'm used to my life stinking." She used her subway pass and got on the subway with me next to her. She looked me in the eye for the first time and suddenly I realized how- broken she was. Her stormy eyes screamed "help," her blonde wavy hair was still damp. Her lips twitched as she talked about her apartment and her life stinking. Her clothes were clearly just grabbed. Her shirt was wrinkly and today she didn't wear any jewelry like she usually did. Why didn't I notice this before? We were just staring until I said,

"Are you okay?"

"I'm existing." Was all she said for the rest of the journey to the place I could feel she was taking me;

Her home.
