My breathing became heavier as I tried to process what I had just heard. We had to take a carriage ride with the notorious Slytherin group. I gave Hermione a worried look and she smiled trying to reassure me. I drew closer to her hoping that the one girl that shot me a death glare wouldn't attempt to confront me. I walked up the small steps and took a seat in the spacious transport. Unfortunately I couldn't bask in it's glory because I felt as if I was about to face my impending doom. Beside me squeezed Ron and Harry who looked equally uncomfortable about the state of affairs. I heard an echo of laugher as Draco and his friends sat opposite us. They ignored our presence, until the girl with short brown hair turned to look at me. She stared me up and down before whispering something to the blond boy beside her. He smirked and looked straight at me. It felt as if his piercing blue eyes were dissecting every piece of my existence. I would not let myself be pulled apart like this. "Do you mind?" The words just tumbled out of my mouth and I instantly regretted it. Ron almost spat out his chocolate and Harry gulped. The girl burst out laughing but Draco stayed silent with only his lips curling into a sly smile.
"Sweetheart, you must be new. Pansy Parkinson." She said holding out her hand. Reluctantly I shook it. Her fingers tightly squeezed my hand which caused me to flinch backwards.
"Harmony Victor, and you're right I am new." I sassed at her. I would not let myself be easily defeated by her intimidating nature. Hermione tugged at my sleeve with a worrying look on her face. I pulled my hand away from her, but smiled to reassure her. Harry and Ron watched curiously as the situation unfolded. Their eyes darted back and forth between Pansy and I.
"Well then Harmony. Let me tell you a little something. Stay out of our way." She pointed to her friends who nodded along with her. I let out a chuckle. Surely she didn't expect me to believe any of her shit. Ron's mouth fell open and Hermione twiddled with her thumbs.
"Let's get one thing straight Parkinson. I do whatever the hell I want. Maybe let your minions make their own decisions." I spat at her. This action surprised me greatly as usually I never acted out amongst people I had just met. A mixture of chatter went through the carriage. Pansy turned to Draco and whispered something to him. He whispered something back, and then turned to face me. He stared directly into my eyes and I could feel my face turning red. "Slytherin is not a house to be messed with. For your own good I advise you to do as Pansy says." His voice was sultry and cool and he crossed his arms as he leaned back into his seat. I rolled my eyes and turned back to my three friends.
"I can't believe you just bad mouthed Pansy Parkinson." Muttered Ron in utter disbelief. His hushed tone of voice made it impossible to decipher whether that was a good or a bad thing.
"She deserved it." I whispered back. I couldn't help but feel content with myself.
"I didn't know you had it in you." Chuckled Harry desperately fumbling with his tie. It was only Hermione who stayed quiet. I faced her and noticed that she didn't look happy at all. Her arms were crossed and she had a slight frown on her face as she looked out the opening in the carriage curtains. I hoped that I hand't rattled her too much, but at the same time I wondered why she was upset in the first place. Weren't these kids a burden? I gently tapped her shoulder hoping for an explanation. Slowly her back turned and she faced me with her eyebrows raised. "Are you okay?" I whispered to her. She bowed her head and kept it there for a couple seconds before raising it back up and looking at me.
"What you did was brave and all, it's just Pansy already fights with me, so you probably made it worse. I don't want her distracting me from my studies." She murmured with frustration.
"I'm sorry. I'll deal with her for you." I attempted to consolidate her but she nodded her head in disagreement.
"Just don't engage her, or any of them for that matter, anymore." She gave me a weak grin before returning motioning for me to look at the outside. I almost hadn't noticed that the carriage had come to a stop. It was now almost pitch black outside but the castles orange lights illuminated the path. Carefully I made sure to have stepped out of the opposite side that Draco stepped out of. I picked up my trunk and began lugging it towards the huge building. The cool air swirled around me and I could smell an arrangement of foods already. Draco's cool laugh sauntered in the air and I almost wanted to turn around and look at him. He was bad news. I recalled what Hermione had told me. I sighed and trotted up to catch up with my friends. The large wooden doors looked grand with their brass knockers. Hagrid stood greeting the students as they entered. I beamed as I past the doors and walked into the huge corridors. The ceilings were extremely tall and candles lit the place nicely. I dropped my trunk off in a pile of others and walked with my friends into a grand hall. I assumed it was more dining, or important assemblies. Each houses banner was greatly displayed at each corner of the hall, and students from the same house sat together. I wondered which table I would be joining. Before I could sit down I felt a tap on my shoulder. An old man with a long grey beard stood behind me. "Hello, Miss Victor. I am Albus Dumbledore. Headmaster here at Hogwarts. Welcome." He greeted me and we shook hands.
"It's a pleasure. I am so exited to start." I chirped which made him smile.
"Since your a transfer do you mind coming to my office with me before the ceremonies start. I figured we would do your sorting in private, plus I need to give you your schedule." He said as he began walking. I followed him. We crossed corridors and staircases and I soon began to worry about how often I will probably get lost here. Finally we walked up a short stone staircase and faced a large door. He opened it wordlessly and motioned for me to step in, which I did with ease.
"Now Miss Victor, let's get your sorted."
