It was a normal day in New York... well, not exactly normal. All of George Washington's soldiers and the General himself had been invited to the Winter Ball that was being hosted by Philip Schuyler. All of George's soldiers were having a great time dancing with the ladies, and Alexander Hamilton was busy wooing over the middle sister of the Schuyler sister trio, Eliza. Angelica was busy dancing with the General, Hercules was talking to a woman that he'd been dancing with, and John Laurens was dancing and talking with Peggy, the youngest of the Schuyler sisters. That left America's favorite fighting Frenchman, Lafayette, all by himself as he caresses a glass of wine. He had attempted to dance with Angelica earlier during the night, but to no avail. He figured he would be alone for most of the night.
Across the ballroom floor, sat a woman at 21 years old. She had H/L H/C hair that was elegantly braided to stay out of her face while dancing. She wore a beautiful F/C gown; it wasn't anything extravagant, but it also held a grace and elegance to it. Her name was Y/N L/N; she was a very close friend of the Schuyler Sisters. Her E/C eyes glanced over the ballroom floor, watching the soldiers and women dance together. When her focus landed on the Frenchman across the room, her heart stopped for nearly 5 seconds. Lafayette found her gaze, and it was as if time had stopped. His focus was completely on her.
Lafayette did not know what exactly prompted him to stand up and stride all the way across the ballroom floor, but he was halfway to this mystery woman and there was no turning back. He stood before her, meeting her eyes. He tried to find the words before he finally found them. "Bonjour. Je m'appelle Marquis de Lafayette. ¿Voudrais-tu danser avec moi mademoiselle?" He asked. Y/N smiled kindly at him. "It's nice to meet you Mr. Lafayette; I'd love to dance with you," she answered. The soldier just stood there flabbergasted for a few minutes. "H-How did you — " he could not find the words to describe his shock. Y/N giggled at his shock, much to his surprise. "My mother's side of the family is French. I grew up learning French as a second language." She answered. Lafayette nodded in understanding before he took her hand, leading her to dance.

3 weeks after sharing a dance together, Y/N and Lafayette are present at Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler's wedding. It was an amazing event that took place, despite all the fighting of the revolution that was currently taking place. Time has slowed itself down so that love could blossom between two souls: Alex and Eliza. Y/N was one of Eliza's bridesmaids, and Lafayette was one of Alexander's groomsmen. For the lineup of the wedding, Lafayette and Peggy walked down together, and Y/N was paired with the ever so lovely John Laurens — he's Alexander's best man. Angelica was walking alongside Hercules Mulligan, who has taken on the role of flower man.
The wedding reception was absolutely breathtaking. Of course, the gentlemen have found their way to the champagne and alcohol. Y/N quite enjoyed Angelica's maid of honor speech. After speeches were made, the band began playing so that Alexander and Eliza could share their first dance as newlyweds. Afterwards, the soldiers and women were either chatting amongst themselves or dancing. Y/N was conversing with the bride herself when she heard a familiar French accent.
"Pardonnes moi. May I borrow Mademoiselle Y/N for a dance?" Lafayette asks.
Eliza shares a happy smile. "She's all yours. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and dance with John. He looks quite lonely." Eliza says before making her way towards the freckled soldier.
Turning his attention back to Y/N, Lafayette sticks his hand out to her. "May I have the honor of dancing with you?" He asks. Y/N smiles as her hand slips into his.
"It would be my honor to dance with you."

It has been months since the marriage of Alexander and Eliza. In those short months, Y/N had grown closer to America's favorite fighting Frenchman. They would go on outings and had even began writing each other letters once Lafayette was called into duty for the Continental Army. He would always address her as Mon Angel or Mon Amour in his letters to her. It set the woman's heart aflutter to read such impactful words.
As the weeks turned into months, Y/N was worrying more and more about the man she had grown to love. She had not heard from him in quite some time; she was worried that he might be injured or worse. That day, she made a decision that she would never regret.
Y/N was joining the Continental Army as a nurse. She was working under Doctor Allston, an esteemed doctor known throughout the colonies. The doctor and Y/N are stationed in Yorktown, tending to the wounded soldiers. The woman is so busy with an injured soldier that she almost doesn't hear a familiar voice in the infirmary.
"Y/N?! What are you doing here?" Lafayette's French words pierced through the air. His tone was frightful and also shocked. Y/N finished tending to her patient to see the Frenchman clutching his right shoulder with his left hand.
"I'm here as a nurse. I work with Doctor Allston." She explains, panic rising in her E/C eyes a bit. "How badly did you piss off a Redcoat to make him stab you?" She tries to joke, but to no avail.
Lafayette looks at her with a serious look on his face. "You should not be here, mon amour. Do you know what you're risking by being here? You're risking your life! Why on earth would you do something this reckless?!" He lectures while said woman is busy dabbing a cloth at his bloody shoulder.
Y/N's eyes meet Lafayette's, and she confesses. "I came to be a nurse because I was worried about you. I know you're fighting for the chance for everyone to have their freedom, but what good is it going to do if you die? I can't stay at home, knowing that the man I love is out there, constantly putting his life on the line for everyone else. I had to come see you and know you were alright." She says, looking towards the flooring of the infirmary tent. She could not bear to see Lafayette's disappointment.
Instead, she feels two of his fingers dip underneath her chin, gently guiding her face to his. There is a smile in place of what would've been a scowl of disappointment. His eyes are soft and loving; something she had been used to seeing.
"Mon angel, you did not have to do this. I am so taken by the fact you did this because of the feelings you harbor for me. I love you so very much, darling Y/N. You are my every waking thought. I fight this war for my friends and for you. I strive to live another day so that I may come back to you. My love, you are the bravest woman I have ever met, and you have as much courage as these men I fight alongside with. You will forever and always be my inspiration." Lafayette says.
Y/N blushes before her lips meet his in a sweet kiss. Their first, and certainly not their last. When they pull away, there are smiles on both of their faces.
Who knew it took a war and becoming a nurse to allow these two souls to confess their feelings?
