My mother was the child of several exemplary personalities. My grandfather is a worldly acclaimed composer while my grandmother had been a famous playwright who wrote, directed, and starred in several universally adored plays and musicals before she passed away, long before I was even born. When I was 5 years old, my mother married for the second time to the owner of a large jewelry company in Japan, and she chose to pack her paints and brushes and took us to Japan to live with him. He took kindly to me as his daughter quickly, and he attempted to spoil me with several of the most beautiful necklaces, earrings, and bracelets to make me like him, despite how much I told him that it wasn't necessary.
When my mother told him of my passion for dance, he moved quickly to enroll me to the most prestigious dance academy in Japan. This is where I explored my love for classical dance even further for the coming years. I was advanced for my age, and because of my family's several connections, I was often asked to perform at galas and balls on top of the academy's recitals.
I was a frequent visitor to the Hitachiin mansion. As a skilled performer, I often came to the Hitachiin's for costume fittings. I had always admired Mrs. Hitachiin for her kindness and generosity towards me when I came to her. As she took my measurements, held fabrics against my skin, and tailored the cloth to the skirt and bodice, she would converse with me sharing with all kinds of things, like all the tid bits of gossip she shared with my mother, or stories about her sons. Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin were always my favorite subject of conversation with their mother, despite the fact that I rarely ever actually saw them. They were a mischievous duo, always hearing stories about how they'd play practical jokes on the house's staff and visitors. When my mother came along with me for an afternoon get together with Mrs. Hitachiin, after my fitting I was told to spend time with them. I walked through the halls of the manor in an attempt to find them, with no luck.
"What are you doing here?" Two voices suddenly called out in unison behind me, causing me to jump.
"You scared me! I've been looking everywhere for you!"
"Who are you talking to?"
I didn't understand the meaning of the question. "Both of you, of course."
"We don't know anyone named both of you."
"Well, I'm talking to Hirkaru and Kaoru!" I snapped quickly becoming increasingly annoyed at their mind games. Trying to calm myself down I inhaled deeply. "What do you guys want to play?"
"We'll only play with you if you win our game first."
"That's right." The one on the left says.
"It's a very special game, and if you win..." The right one.
"We'll play whatever game you want." They finished together, completing the sentence.
I thought for a moment. It felt unfair that they were setting up requirements, as if playing with them was some kind of privilege. And yet despite that, I agreed to their game. "So what is this game?"
"You have to guess which one of us is Hikaru."
I stared at them for what was a good minute. I barely knew anything about them other than their schemes from the stories their mother would tell me about them. I mentally traced each of their faces, hair, bodies, just looking for any semblance of an indicator to be able to find the difference between them.
"Umm, you're Hikaru!" Pointing to the one on the left.
"You got it wrong." They said bluntly as if they'd read my mind already knowing I would guess incorrectly. Their faces, completely emotionless, and yet their eyes, somewhat glassy.
