I've always have been different. I despise that word. Different. People say it's great being different, or that it has offered them astonishing opportunities. All it ever brought to the table was embarrassment, pain, and anxiety. It hated me for some awful reason.
My parents were fine. No diseases or curses, unlike me. They had everything in order, and they apparently had my life planned out before I was born. I guess I can thankfully say, I put a little bump in the road for that to happen.
I remember that disgusting day with vividness. I was homeschool until then and to be honest, it freaked me out. It was the beginning of third grade. I said goodbye to my parents as I made my way towards the school, looking at it in awe. There were so many colors surrounding the school. Oranges and yellows were whizzing above my head. Everyone was completely ignoring the colors as if nothing was there. I guess they're used to it.
As I open the door, I'm approached by an older lady who towered over me, looking around her mid 40's.She had a few wrinkles on her tan skin, and wore a blue shirt with black slacks. She looked bossy so I called her Ms. Meanie. She had brown hair that went to her shoulders and chocolate brown eyes. Too bad Ms. Meanie's face was hidden be makeup. That woman looked nice but she gave off waves of authority and strictness. She had a red glow around her.
"Hello sweetie. What's your name?" She spoke in a sickening sweet voice. I wish I could figured out her name but Ms. Meanie suited her just fine.
"My name is Rosemary Winters ma'am.", I said shyly. Either she didn't expect me to say "ma'am" or she didn't think I had an accent from the look on her face. That's right. Be shocked you old, rotten Meanie-head.
Recovering from her shock, she responded with, "Nice to meet you Rosemary. I'm Ms. Macintosh, the school's principal. Let's go fine where your class is." At least I was close to what her last name started with. That is perfectly acceptable for me, but I still like Ms. Meanie better.
Ms. Macintosh put her wrinkly hand around me and guided me forward. Hey! No need to get touchy. Can can play follow the leader remarkably well. She stopped in front of a glass wall that had a column of paper going from top to bottom. At the top, on paper had a big "3rd" on it. I guess that means my grade.
Ms. Meanie still had her arm around me while she raised her right hand and started looking at the bottom of the list that I guessed were names. She mumbled names until she shouted out "Ah! Winters. You will be in Mrs. Bradburn's class. Go right down that hall and you'll see her name." She pointed her index finger down a hall to my left.
I didn't need to be told twice. She gave me the creeps in the first 5 seconds of talking. I fast-walked down the hall looking for my teachers name. I shoved past people and looked from left to right to find her name. Every person had different colors, so I started to get a headache from everyone. All the smiles and words were overwhelmingly at that point and I knew I needed to get out of that hall, fast.
Finally, I found her name. Mrs. Bradburn's name look like a forest green to me. She must be nice. I pushed past a yellow looking kid and entered the room. Colors were swirled around the room and created different mixtures. I could see a person who had a forest green color that stood around a brown desk greeting grayish people. I guessed that's the teacher.
I was proven right when she saw my presence and waved me over. Wow, very formal I see. I walked up to her as the boring-colored people went away. She chattered away starting with, "Hello darling. You must be new here by the look on your face. Don't worry. I'll guide and help you around the class room so you can get ready for this exciting new school year!" Okay! Someone clearly put sugar in their cereal this morning. Apparently, she was nice and crazy too.
"I'm Rosemary", I said, still shocked from her over cheery voice. She looked down at her list of names and nodded. "There you are. Right at the bottom. Let me show you where your locker is in the classroom and where you'll be sitting." At least her voice calmed the freak down a little bit.
I nodded my head and followed her to a wall that was covered in blue, shiny lockers. I put my backpack I there and took out what I needed for my class. She then showed me my desk which was towards the back. When I reached my desk, I saw two pieces of paper laying there. I thanked the teacher and sat down, looking at what was in front of me.
Mrs. Bradburn left me and went back to her desk where other students were waiting. I picked up a neon pink sheet that had green swirls and a bunch of different colors popping out at me. The teachers at this school must go really out of there way for decorating.
The bright sheet was an introduction paper, listing all the rules and expectations for the rest of that year. I quickly scanned over it and placed it aside. The last paper was a worksheet. The sheet was white but the words were very colorful and vibrant. At the top, it explained that we were supposed to describe what the word reminds us of. Seemed easy.
I quickly wrote down the answers, as they were right in front of me. All I did was sit back and relaxed while everyone worked until the teacher came up to the front. I sat up a little straighter and focused on her. She gained everyone's attention before speaking. "Hello everyone. My name is Mrs. Bradburn and I can tell from the bright faces that this will be an exciting school year. Hopefully, everyone got the work sheet done and we will be going over the answers after I take roll call."
I looked around at everyone as their name got called. There was a lot of different colors mixing around the room. I hadn't seen anything like it. Since I was homeschooled, I never got to see anything new. When I heard my name being called, I looked forward and said a simple "here".
Mrs. Bradburn soon started calling on people to answer. When we were on the last word, which was "snow", she called on my name. I cleared my throat before saying, "It reminds me of a blue lighter than sky blue and has little dots of pink." Everyone started laughing at me while I looked around, confused. "No honey. What does it remind you of? Not what color you think it looks like.", Mrs. Bradburn said as she was quieting the other kids around me.
I looked at her and, again, repeated myself. "It reminds me of that, Mrs. Bradburn. That's what I'm reminded of." Again the class started laughing.
I started hearing words like freak and different. My stomach turned into a knot and I was getting dizzy. I glanced around at everyone, whos' fingers were pointed at me. I gripped the edge of my desk until my knuckles turned white. My heart was beating faster. I was humiliated and judged by everyone.
My teacher thought I was joking around so she sent me to the principle's office. She said I was "disrupting the class and disrespectful". Well okay then.
I was later taken to the doctor to find out what was wrong with me. My parents thought their little perfect child was messed up. I found out they were right. I remember sitting on the bed in a checkup room, waiting patiently for the test to come back. I'm pretty sure there was nothing wrong with me. I told them that I saw colors everywhere I went. The doctor entered the room as my parents stood up. The doctor said this really weird word that I didn't know the meaning of, and he said I was different.
Somehow that checkup really opened my eyes and showed me that I was another meaning.
