"The party couldn't have been that bad" Derek turned to his best friend, Hayley, as they walked outside after class.
"Derek, I really don't want to talk about it" Hayley sighed before turning as she heard someone greet her.
"You're telling me that you didn't have any fun at all?" Derek teased Hayley as he let out a chuckle.
"Maybe a tiny bit..." Hayley trailed off, shaking her head.
Hayley heard even more people greet her with 'hi' and 'hello' and at this point, she was just confused.
"You're rad!" A girl called out to Hayley as they passed each other.
"Okay, something strange is going on" Hayley furrowed her eyebrows as someone handed her a badge that said 'Vote Hayley!' on it.
"You're 'rad'? Yeah, totally something strange there" Derek joked, as Hayley narrowed her eyes at him.
Looking down at a flyer a guy had just passed to her, Hayley raised an eyebrow.
The purple sheet of paper read 'Vote Hayley Prom Queen'. Hayley was now even more confused but not nearly as confused as Derek was beginning to feel.
Hayley was headed for a place to sit at lunch when Jack began to make an announcement over the PA system.
"Ballots are out and it looks like the mighty Tay has some competition!" Jack announced, leading the students in the playground to stop and pay attention to what he was saying.
Tay? Competition? Jack had to be on something - at least, that's how it seemed. There simply was no way someone could rule over Tay, was there?
"That's right ladies and gents, you heard it here, the queen of Italian takeaway herself, Hayley-" Jack continued, sending Hayley into panic.
"What?!" Hayley half-yelled, looking up at Derek. "Who the hell would even nominate me?"
Derek chuckled and gave a small shrug. "Not even I can answer that one."
The thing was, was while the majority of the school still saw Tay as the top of the food chain, some were thinking differently. Those people were the ones at the party, who'd seen Tay and Hayley's altercation.
"Hayley, congratulations on the nomination. You go, girl!" Holly smiled, placing an arm over Hayley's shoulder.
Tay was no where in sight, but if she was and had seen Holly, she would no-doubt be in a furious state.
"Um... Thank you?" Hayley spoke in a weary tone, feeling confused.
All of this was all so new to Hayley and she really didn't know why she was nominated.
"You totally deserve it, I mean after-" Amber began to say, until her phone started to ring. Answering, she sighed. "Hello Tay. Uh-huh. Alright. Fine."
Holly and the other girls began to worry about what the phone call was about, although they assumed it was most likely Tay having a fit over Hayley's nomination.
"Tay needs help. She said it was a '911 emergency'" Amber shrugged, placing her phone into her pocket and shrugging. "I guess we have to go."
"We don't have to go, you do know that, right?" Holly sighed, not wanting to deal with Tay's crap.
Hayley watched the girls converse about Tay and wondered what the so-called emergency was even about - that was until it hit her and she smiled to herself in realisation.
"She's our friend" Amber folded her arms, walking away from Derek and Hayley for some privacy.
"And friends change" Holly replied, raising an eyebrow and folding her arms also.

As much as Amber didn't want to deal with Tay's breakdown, she figured she'd go along anyway. It could be worth witnessing, just for the laugh.
Tay had been sobbing and freaking out about something, so naturally Holly was worried.
"That asshole broke... he... he broke up with... with me!" Tay sniffled, wiping her eyes with her sleeves.
"You're kidding" Holly gasped, shaking her head. She wasn't actually all that surprised or even bothered by it, though.
"Alex Gaskarth... What kind of name is that anyway? And what kind of guy picks his nose on national television? And the dancing! That was so bad!" Tay cried out, burying her head into her hands while still sitting in her convertible.
"What happened? Why'd he break up with you, anyway?" Amber asked, shifting her weight to the side as she folded her arms.
Amber had thought that Tay was over reacting, as did Holly now that she had realised what was so 'urgent'. They weren't going to admit it, though.
"I don't know" Tay lied, sniffling as she wiped her tears away with the sleeve of her shirt.
The thing is, Alex broke up with Tay because he had landed himself a spot on a new reality show, which was going to make him even more well known.
Alex didn't think his relationship with Tay was serious, but she sure did. Tay wasn't going to say that to her friends, though - she couldn't, it was too embarrassing.
"Well, you know what? You're better off without him, anyway" Holly smiled, passing Tay a packet of tissues from her backpack.
Tay wiped her eyes and blew her nose loudly. "You girls are the best. What would I do without friends like you?"
Holly scoffed and rolled her eyes, glad Tay was too busy fixing her mascara that had smeared all over her face to notice what the girl was doing.
