I know it's going to sound cliché, but I discovered my super human strength when I was six years old. For the first few years of my life, I thought it was normal for little kids to have some strength. I had no idea that it was not normal for kids to squish an apple with one bear hand or to break a handful of sticks in half like it was a single tooth pick.
Some of the kids in my first year class would make fun of me, calling me the Hulk. This was probably because I was always flipping classroom desks when I got mad. But I really thought it was normal.
That is....until the last day of school before summer vacation.
Some of my classmates lived near me, so I always tried to walk home with them. I couldn't understand why they would tease me and run off. Usually, I would walk home sad and slowly, wishing for a friend.
As I walked passed the construction site, one of the kids tripped on a wooden plank that had fallen over onto the sidewalk. The other kids laughed and called her names for being dumb enough to trip. She was from my class. Her name was Lim Hyunjae, the smartest kid in class.
I ran over to help her up, but she just slapped my hand away, glaring at me angrily.
Her expression made me feel sad. Had I done something wrong? I watched her help herself up. As she dusted off her pants, I heard shouting coming from the workers in the construction zone. When I turned to look for the noise, I could see the workers were panicked.
A forklift was out of control. The driver was unable to steer it away and it was headed straight for us. I didn't know what to do. But when I looked at Hyunjae, she looked shocked and scared.
So I did what any brave kid would do.....I pushed her out of the way.
Thanks to that incident, everyone who witnessed me being hit by the forklift knew about my super human strength. Because rather than being crushed or thrown into the street, my body stopped the heavy machine...without a scratch on me.
Terrified at the possible consequences, my parents decided it would be safer for me if we moved far away; where I wouldn't be recognized.
So we moved from Busan all the way to Ilsan. There I spent most of the summer alone, as usual. Even though my parents bought me a lot of video games to keep me distracted, they weren't as fun playing alone.
Time flew by slowly and my 2nd year of elementary school finally started..
By the way, my name is Park Daegi and at my new school, I'm going to keep my super strength a secret.
