Although
you can't be here with me,
We are truly not apart,
Until the final breath
I take,
You'll be living in my heart.
After losing my grandfather, everything changed. The way I looked at myself, others and the world. My world shattered around me, probably because he was my world. You couldn't know what I felt unless you've had someone close to you vanish into thin air, as they burnt his body near the river, the heated embers flying away from me towards the sky.
You couldn't have known how I felt, when I was called upon to light his pyre, unless..... you have experienced the same. The cold wind singed my cheeks. It was the same wind that carried those embers. It was a spiritual sight, or so said the onlookers.
I was solely aware of the ringing in my ears. As though, at the slightest nick, my blood would gush out of my veins. My head pounded as I smelt the burning body. The empty vessel that once held the soul dearest to me.
"Lily, will you please lead me home?" I asked the Omega assigned to me.
"Yes, Miss."
Lily was kind and soft spoken. Although, my rank forbid me to call her a friend, she was the only person close to being one. Her silent demeanor always made me feel at ease. My black blindfold sailing in the wind, I straightened myself and swatted any creases that may have formed on my black dress, feeling the silken material flow through my hands. Arching my back a little, I held my head high as I walked towards the cottages, the way my grandfather had taught me to behave in moments of distress.
And today here I am. Blue. The blind daughter of a Beta.
After my grandfather's funeral 3 years ago, I was greeted by my father in my cottage. Only if a snarl could be an acceptable greeting.
"Bitch, you are going to live with me now. And I for one am going to make sure you pay for everything you've done."
My father loathed me. I couldn't blame him. And you will shortly know why.
Skip to when I was about to be brought into this malicious world.
My father, the Beta, had a beautiful mate. Prettier than the pack's Luna, or so they said. She had beautiful long hair made of gold. They swept the very ground she touched when she let them loose. With her sharp features she had snagged the first place for Miss Universe in the humane world. Her brow crowned a set of enigmatic blue eyes. Something I had inherited from her, therefore my name, Blue. She was an inspiration to our pack. The epitome of perfection filled with nothing but humility. Her name was Leah, and she loved my father with all her heart.
They had 5 happy years before they decided it was time to conceive a child. Same as any couple we know. Shopping, a playful banter, visiting a fair, solving pack disputes and the list keeps going. Soon after their talk on having a child she became pregnant with me. Her pregnancy was a blissful event, with everyone congratulating her on her glow. I heard she used to joyfully complain how I spoiled her figure. Everyone hoped for a boy. A future Beta. A Second in command. The pride of the pack.
When the day of delivery arrived, my mother was alone at home. A cottage my father had built a little far off, so we could have a private life. When her water broke, my father was away for some urgent work assigned to him. Since there was no one to attend to her, she gave birth at home and no one knows what happened after that, because she was all alone. Some say that the smell of blood may have attracted rogues who took her away and killed her. Whereas others said that she never really loved my father and ran away. There were many theories. Each, more absurd than the other. All the elders knew was, when my father got home he was greeted by my crying self lying in a pool of blood. That was the last day he saw Leah.
Everyone figured I was blind after their incessant hand gestures had no effect on me. My blindness aggravated my father, for my eyes were the only reminder of his mate. They drove him to madness. There was a time when he stopped talking to everyone altogether and kept me prisoner in the house. They cared to contact us a month later, only to find me malnourished and bruised and my father drunk and in a slumber. After this incident I was taken in by my grandfather.
