The Mistake

As the last 15 minutes of economics approached the students were told to return to their groups. Umeko found her seat next to Kyoya, placing her notebook on her desk and tried her best to keep her head straight.

“I have the library all set up for us when you arrive. We will be undisturbed for as long as we need.” The way Kyoya was looking at her the only word Umeko heard was ‘undisturbed’. She felt the heat rise through her body, the only thing she was thinking about was all the things they could do undisturbed for the hours she would spend there. Why did he have to look at her like that? He was basically telling her there would be little research going on, or he can just research me. Umeko looked away quickly.

“I, uh,” Umeko began, but lost her thoughts. Clearing her throat she tried again “I will be unable to work on this project until next week.” She hoped it sounded as confident as it did in her head

Kyoya adjusted his glasses with his fingers then looked back to Umeko.

“And why is that Umeko?” The look in his eyes took Umeko’s breath away. Why does have had to look at me that way? Does he know what he does to me with just a single look? Umeko tried desperately to gain her composure.

Kyoya was taking note of every little movement, very little blush that swept her face. Poor girl, this is just too easy. He moved in closer, further clouding Umeko’s thoughts.

“I will be attending a university visit for the rest of this week and I will not return until Monday evening.” The girl had heart, Kyoya gave her that much. She was fighting his advances so hard today, unlike yesterday where she was eating out of the palm of his hand.

“That leaves us only three days to work on our assignment.” Umeko did not like the tone Kyoya used, it made her shiver. She knew how important his grades were to him, he was top of the class after all. Did he doubt her abilities? Did he feel she needed the full two weeks to complete the assignment because she couldn’t work fast enough? Or she couldn’t keep up with him?  How dare he doubt me, a Takoya!

“Surely you do not think we will be unable to finish this small of an assignment in three day.” She stared at him, challenging him, nothing but pure fire in her eyes. Obviously Kyoya had struck a nerve in the girl, however he truly enjoyed the passion that lay behind her eyes. He felt a fire light inside him, I do love a challenge. Perhaps she is not as weak as I thought. Kyoya gave her a small laugh.

“Of course not Umeko-chan. I know we will be just fine.” He smiled, but Umeko did not return the gesture. He was hoping to calm the situation by added the endearing term to the end of her name, but clearly she was locking him out. I can’t lose her now, I was so close.

Kyoya was about to say something else when the bell rang. Umeko wasted no time in collecting her things and leaving. Kyoya had no choice but to chase after her in the hall. It was so thick with students he could not even get near her. He watched as she made her way outside and to her car. He ran as fast as he could to her door, but he was too late. Her car was already pulling away when he reached the spot it was parked in.

It was at that moment the panic set in, what if I cannot gain her back? I will be unable to complete the task my father set upon me. To think of that failure made him feel sick. He will not find out about this incident. I will tell him all is going well and Umeko will return next week to spend all three days with me.  He made his way into his own car, brooding over what he had done. How could I have been so careless with Umeko-chan? She is so fragile. Kyoya froze, he couldn’t believe the words that had just run through his head. The girl was nothing, a piece to a puzzle, a prize to be won. If anything he should see her as nothing more than a guest at the host club.

As the car continued on Kyoya couldn’t help but wonder, had the girl made that big of an impact on him? She makes me feel like I matter, like she is there to listen to me and only me. Kyoya put his fingers to his brow, sighing loudly. This will never work if I keep thinking like this.
