ian was stuck working on the day he was supposed to have off. whoever was supposed to be working today, he hadn't checked the schedule, had to fly halfway across the country very last minute.
so instead of being at matt's house, doing something he actually wanted to do, he was stuck at this stupid cafe. he actually enjoyed his job though, he was just annoyed he had to rush in.
it was a small place, so small that only one person had to work at a time, and the pay was decent. it was right next to a major office space and a college, so people would come in during their lunch breaks, or stop by to pull all-nighters and study.
ian enjoyed working night shifts more because of this. he liked to see who had to study, and talking to them about what they were majoring in. this was all probably because he had dropped out of college to start a band with his friends, which was what he could have been doing today.
it was a slow day though, so he just hung out behind the counter, scrolling through his phone. every so often someone would come in, but they wouldn't stay. there was only three people in the whole place, and they were all busy doing something, so he really didn't have much to do.
he poured himself a cup of coffee and heard his phone buzz on the counter. he sat the mug down and picked up his phone, seeing that matt had texted him.
'hey i did something really stupid and i'm really sorry. i accidentally told devon where you work and he said he was coming to see you. again i am so sorry ian.'
ian ran a hand through his messy dreads, this was not something he wanted to deal with today. he did not want to see his ex-boyfriend on a day that already sucked.
things didn't end too nicely, and ian was hoping to never see him again. you see, devon apparently didn't know the word loyalty. it wasn't in his vocabulary.
he cheated on ian seven times, but ian was head over heels in love with him. he ignored all the red flags and everything his friends had told him. at least as long as he could, until he caught him himself. it wasn't a good feeling, and ian didn't know how to cope after the breakup.
but that was nearly a year ago, and ian was doing just fine now. well up until two minutes ago. and if devon had gone to matt's house, he only had five minutes until devon showed up here.
he needed to think of a plan and he needed to do it fast. it's not like he could just pretend not to be here, no one else was working today. he could face him head on, but that wasn't something that ian could do.
there was something that didn't seem like it would work, but it was an idea. he could just ask someone in here to pretend to be dating him. he doubted that anyone in here would say yes, but he could at least try.
and after all this thinking, ian guessed he only had a couple minutes before devon walked through those doors. ian looked for the nearest table with someone sitting at it and quickly walked out from behind the counter.
ian was naturally awkward, but this was even worse. he sat down in front of a stranger in a booth. he looked up at him, eyes searching his face in confusion.
ian couldn't decide what color his eyes were. they seemed green, but he wasn't exactly sure. he realized that he had just been staring and hadn't actually said anything.
he nervously played with the strings of his hoodie, glancing out the front window. "so, um, i have an odd question. my ex is going to be here any second, and i was wondering if you could pretend to be my boyfriend?"
