I am an adopted member of my pack.
"Evie, you need to eat." My mother commanded as she set her brown suitcase on the blue counter top near our table.
I sighed into my bowl and stirred my cereal around with the spoon. I rubbed my eyes tiredly with my other hand as I felt my mother's eyes on me.
"Kane said you had another nightmare last night." Mom observed, her warm chocolate brown eyes looking me over. I just shrugged as I felt her warm hands tuck a long golden strand of hair behind my ear. I bit lower lip as I stared at my mother.
Where I was short and thin, she was tall, graceful and had curves to die for.
Where I had long thick blond hair, she had glossy black hair that was almost midnight blue in pitch darkness.
Where I had dark green eyes that my friends referred to as "mossy" eyes, mom had warm dark brown eyes that always held a kindness.
My mom was exotic where I was just plain. We didn't look anything alike.
But that was because Accalia Faelan is my adoptive mother and a shifter herself.
I am not a shifter, and the only human in my pack. From what I was told, I was abandoned as a baby and Kane was the one who saved me from the streets. Even though Kane is first and foremost the only father figure I have ever known, he did not raise me by himself. In fact, I didn't even live with him. I live with Accalia Faelan, my werewolf adoptive mother. My best friend.
She was the only one who cared to make my life as normal as possible...
"Evie, do you need to go see someone about these nightmares? They have been happening alot more lately..." Mom said while turning her back to the fridge. I sighed and decided to throw my thick hair into a low pony tail while pushing my food away.
"No mom. I am alright." I said while the gruesome nightmare scene brushed against the walls of my mind. I repressed a shudder and laid my elbows on the table.
"Actually, I have been meaning to ask you something..." I started even though I already knew the answer that was waiting for me. Mom raised her brow as she put creamer in her coffee mug. I cleared my throat and stared at the table.
"The senior trip is soon. All of my class is going to New York for a week in November. Is there anyway I can possibly go? Alone?" I asked, my eyes finally meeting her expectant look. Mom sighed as she put her coffee mug down and bit her lower lip.
"Evie sweetie, you know I don't mind at all. However, Kane has a different tune." He doesn't like you going out of the state." Mom said with heat in her voice. She usually always has a an edge to her voice when she mentions him.
I groaned and pushed my chair out from under the table with slight anger.
"But why? It doesn't make any sense! I am perfectly safe out there." I yelled and crossed my arms over my chest. Mom did the same and frowned.
"Kane has his reasons, Evie. He just doesn't want anything to happen to you. I know his restrictions for you are absurd." She said with a cold edge to her voice. She sighed and raised her brow at me.
"Is any of the boys going? Caden or Zev? What about Kalissa? If one of them were going, especially one of the boys, Kane may consider." Mom asked and I just frowned.
"Why does it matter! Why can't I just so somewhere alone for once? If Zev were to go, I would kill myself or him on the ride there alone." I complained and stood up, irritated. Mom raised both of her brows and frowned intently.
"Evangeline, I know you are aggravated, but I will not be yelled at by you." She reprimanded. I shrunk back and mumbled an apology. Mom just sighed and moved in to hug me tightly. She was a couple of inches taller than my short frame.
