Zoë bumped into my shoulder and gave me her usual gleeful grin as we lined up along with the other graduates of the 98th Training Corps of the southern division. Only a few days after we graduated, and here we are standing in front of Commanders of the Military Police, the Survey Corps and the Garrison. I can't explain how nervous I was. Just a week ago, I was so sure that I would join the Military Police. Being ranked 1st amongst the graduates, I was given the option to join the elite forces of the Military Police. Only the top ten cadets of each training corps, are allowed to join. However, now I'm doubtful whether or not the Military Police is the right path to choose.
I tried pursuading Zoë who was ranked 5th, to join the Military Police with me, but she was so certain that her destiny lies beyond the walls. That killing titans was her way of "Saving Humanity", and she could say this with a huge smile on her face. Clearly she has never seen a titan in her life.
As the selection ceremony was about to begin, Zoë lean over to my face and asked,
"So have you chosen which regiment to join yet?"
I stepped backed to prevent her face from being too close to mine and answered ,
"No."
"Well you better start thinking, alright?" said Zoë as she went back to stand in her position.
Zoë and I were close, even before we joined the Training Corps. She was the one who have helped me get back on my feet and took me into her home. Her family was very caring and gave me shelter, when I had nowhere else to go. They willingly took me in, although I was just a mere stranger to them. When Zoë's brother, Friedrich was killed in his last Scout Expedition, Zoë insisted that she would avenge his death by joining the corps herself. It was met with much dissaproval by her family. They were afraid that the same fate would befall on her. Reasonable concern I thought, but Zoë was persistent that she would not stay silent behind these walls, and do what is right for humanity.
As someone who is indebted by the Hange's family kindness, I too followed Zoë and joined the 98th Training Corps of the Southern District in the year 841.
It seems that my destiny is intertwine with Zoë's. When Keith Shadis, the Commander of the Survey Corps asked for cadets to join him, I followed Zoë who was walking towards the commander's side. I was shocked to see many foolish cadets walking towards the same side, willing to risk their lives for the sake of "humanity". I was also horrified when I realised that I too, unknowingly have chosen the same path as these soldiers.
Zoë turned around, surprised that I have chosen to join the Survey Corps. She elbowed me and said
"What are you doing here, silly? I thought you wanted a safe and peaceful life as a Military Police?"
I shrugged and replied, "Then who's going to tell me if you're alive or not?".
Zoë's eyes glimmed excitedly.
"Awee you were worried about me!" She chuckled.
I shoved my palm to her face and huffed,
"Shut up!".
Zoë took pride in my annoyance and hugged me tightly. I tried pushing her away, but her tall stature and long arms, prevented me getting away from her embrace.
Soon enough, we were moving in to the Scout's base and luckily for us, we were to share the same dormitory and be put under the guidance of Captain Flagon.

Author's note: This story will take place before the original AOT series as of now. I will be giving a name for you, the "Reader" as it will be easier to write a character's name rather than "Y/N". So I hope you can imagine yourself as the given character. As you can see from the description, her name will be 'Lea'. More information will be given on the later chapters.
Also Zoë is the character we know and love, Hange. I decided that Zoë would be an appropriate first name rather than Hange. Thus, Hange is her surname. Since the character, Lea is friends with Hange, it will be better that they call themselves on first name basis.
Don't expect romance to happen quickly in the story, as I would like it to take in a pace that is realistic and I want to focus on character development and my own story line. Thank you for taking your time reading this.
