Chapter Twenty-Five

Lukas moved out of the cameras view quickly, pausing just for a second to think of a good idea. The best idea would have been to get out of there as soon as possible, but he realized that the hunters might tighten security, or even kill the prisoners. Instead of retreating he moved quickly, deeper into the building.

He had no idea where the wolves were being held, nor was he likely to find a map that would tell him where to go. Instead, he had to try to rely on his sense of smell. If he had been in his wolf form, he was sure he could have located his fellow wolves quickly, but that would make him too easy to identify for the hunters, as well as make it more difficult to bring his gun with him.

Even in his human form, he did have a sensitive nose, and he knew he could make do with that. He just needed to find a good place to start looking. When he saw a set of stairs going down, he decided that was as good a place as any and ran down.

Once in the basement, he knew he was in the right place. Not only could he smell wolves, but he also detected blood and silver. It didn’t take him very long to locate the source of the scents. The door was locked and the handle was coated with silver. Fortunately, he didn’t need to use his hand to open the door.

He kicked the door open and saw the three wolves inside. Two were bound back to back in chairs and the third, smaller person was curled up in the corner. He went to the corner first, thinking she was a child, but when he touched her, she jerked away, revealing her face to him and letting him see that although young, she was not a child.

“Come on,” Lukas said. “I’m getting you out of here.”

“No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “Just leave me here.”

“You’re safe now.” Lukas tried to pull her to her feet, but she resisted. “You can’t stay here. They’ll kill you.”

“Let them,” said the female wolf tied to the chair. “Bitch’s fault we got captured!”

“You’re not helping,” Lukas said.

“I don’t want to help that traitorous bitch,” she spat angrily. “These people here. They’re friends of hers. Leave her here and get us out of here!”

Although Lukas didn’t want to leave the girl with the hunters, he could see she was being difficult and he didn’t know how much time he had. If someone had seen him on the camera, he knew he didn’t have much time. He could at least get two of the wolves out.

He left the girl and went to the side of the other two. He reached out to grab the ropes, but the man growled as Lukas put his hand near him and he hesitated.

“Silver,” the man groaned.

“The ropes have silver powder on them,” said the female. “You’ll have to cut them.”

Ignoring the warning, Lukas grabbed the ropes with his hand and started to untie them. In less than a minute, he had them free from the bindings. The woman immediately went to the doorway to listen for any sounds of company, but satisfied that they were good for the moment, she went back to see if the other wolf was okay.

“How?” the man asked, barely able to sit up.

“You’re like her, aren’t you,” the woman accused, looking at the girl who had barely moved from her spot in the corner.

“Like what?”

“A half breed. Working for the hunters.”

“Not even close,” Lukas said, shaking his head. “Silver immunity is all. Now get out of here. They might know I’m here and if they do, you don’t have a lot of time. Is he okay?”
