"Why do you act like that?"

It was a simple question, really. A question that had been on the forefront of your mind for a while now, finally pushing past your lips as you glanced concernedly over at your friend.

The brown-eyed boy raised a brow at you, frown deepening. His upturned mouth disappeared for a moment as he took a sip from his juice box, the slurping of the straw filling the silence between you both.

"You know what I'm talking about, Jyushimatsu. Don't try to avoid the question," you pressed stubbornly. You twisted your body so that you could see him better, your knees knocking uncomfortably against the steps that you sat on, away from the stares and whispers of your classmates.

Jyushimatsu stared at you for a moment more before scoffing, turning his head to face the blank wall beside him. Silence settled once again around the two of you, the strain and tension building up as the seconds ticked by. A heavy sigh escaped from him, his expression unseen from where you sat.

"... What else am I supposed to do?" He muttered. His voice was no longer gravelly and growling; instead becoming more natural and boyish. Aside from the fact that he sounded so tired.

His grip on his empty carton tightened for a moment before he released his hold on it, allowing it to fall with a soft clatter beside his feet.

"No matter how I act, they'll still see me as weird."

That was painfully true. The students of the school treated the Matsuno sextuplets as some kind of strange phenomenon, along with the fact that their lifestyles were completely different from theirs.

Their house was smaller than most, and slightly cramped. They all slept in a single futon with each other. They all shared the same clothes that they wore on their backs. They looked, sounded and even acted the same.

Well, they used to. Until they drifted apart.

Your heart clenched in despair as you had to watch your childhood friends fall away from each other. They were family - they did everything together, the idea of being separated from each other never being a concern of theirs - and yet they saw each other as strangers, even in their own home.

You had tried your best to get them to speak with one another again, like they used to, but now you were instead prying them forcefully apart as they argued aggressively - their playful roughhousing and comedic jabs at each other now just seen as painful and insulting.

And the one who everybody saw as constantly joyful, and a literal ball of sunshine. Even he had changed, his personality becoming a complete 180 of what you were used to seeing.

It hurt you. But you knew it hurt them ten times more.

"Besides, it's not like they will care. We're not..." A pause.

"We're not even brothers anymore."

Hastily, you stood up and moved to sit beside him, your shoulders and knees rubbing against each other. Jyushimatsu blinked down at you curiously, only to stiffen as you wrapped your arms around his torso and rested your chin on his shoulder.

"I miss you guys. And I miss the old Jyushimatsu that I used to know."

Threading your fingers through his dark locks, you held him tightly against you, hoping to convey the sympathy and sorrow that you felt for him. Slowly, Jyushimatsu reciprocated your affections, hands grabbing fistfuls of your school blazer as he hid his face in the crook of your neck.

You felt his shoulders tremble slightly, causing you to rub soothing circles onto his back.

"It's okay... I'm always here for you, Jyushimatsu."

The clothing on your shoulder dampened. You both continued to hold each other, long after the bell signalling the end of lunch came around. You wouldn't let go. Not until he was okay.
