Kimiko first followed her brother around a bit, relishing in the amount of time she remained safe from anyone else. She still wished for a hole to open up beneath her and to swallow her whole after that incident with Tsukishima, but so far there was no hole and she had to continue living with the embarrassment.
After a while Kimiko followed Kiyoko and Hitoka to where they were gathered talking and introducing each other to the managers of the other teams, all of them kind souls and actually not being too persistent, much to Kimiko and Hitoka's liking.
Astonishing enough, Kimiko felt herself get along with the other managers rather quickly, already thoroughly immersed in conversation with Suzumeda Kaori from Fukurodani. Kimiko couldn't put her finger onto why, but she liked the Fukurodani managers already.
Kaori was currently telling a tale about their team's ace, Bokuto, the boy with the spiked black and white hair, Kimiko completely invested into what she was saying, when suddenly a voice tuned up just beside Kimiko saying "Yo, ace-chan."
The Karasuno first year would've jumped through the roof if she could've reached that high, honestly. She couldn't remember the last time she had such a heart attack, just from hearing a voice. Then again, she hadn't noticed the person stalking up to them until it had been too late.
The girls stifled a laugh, Hitoka joining Kimiko in the stroke she was having and the boy who had interrupted them laughed along.
"Ya, don't call don't call me that!", Kimiko shrieked, a hand over her racing heart. She looked as pale as a ghost at this point.
Kuroo laughed full heartedly, sounding more like a dying hyena than a third year high school boy.
"What, should I call you Empress instead?", he questioned, tilting his head at the girl before him who was now turning redder than his track suit.
"N-no!"
"Then I'm going to call you ace-chan," he concluded with a smug grin.
Kimiko crossed her arms and turned her gaze towards the floor, as if glaring at the floor would make her blush go away, while she replied "I do have a name, you know?"
"I'll call you whatever you ask me to, chibi-chan."
"On second thought, ace-chan doesn't sound so bad," Kimiko muttered under her breath, before she asked "What do you want?"
"What, I can't just come up and talk to my lovely ace-chan without reason?", Kuroo asked and raised a brow, looking mildly offended.
"First of all, my? Why do you think you have the right to claim me already as yours? Second of all, no."
Kimiko didn't know where this sudden boost of confidence came. Despite her anxiety issues, some time, years, ago a doctor suspected she might be tending towards bipolarity. Her mother though wasn't too fond if that diagnosis, as there was absolutely no known case in their entire family history and they didn't expect Kimiko to be any different.
"Alright, alright, you got me. I came to ask whether our mighty ace-chan would like to play a match with a team of your choosing against a team of my choosing," Kuroo spoke, hands raised in defense.
Kimiko couldn't say no to a volleyball match including her. For that, she loved volleyball too much.
"So, what's it gonna be, ace-chan?", Kuroo asked, a smug grin plastered on his lips. It's like he knew that she wouldn't say no.
"Let's get the first day of practice over first, before we do a match," Kimiko replied, turning away from the bed headed third year and looked through the crowd of volleyball players for her brother, hoping to spot him easily although the tall crowd did make it a little difficult.
"What, you scared you're gonna lose against me when I'm all powered out from a day of rough practice matches?"
If this guy knew one thing for sure, then it was how to get on Kimiko's nerves.
"No, I'm worried you'll sit out every practice match crying because you lost against a girl," Kimiko shot back, finally spotting her brother and making her way towards him, hoping to leave the third year behind. But, of course, not.
"You seem to be underestimating me, ace-chan," Kuroo called after her, slowly pulling more and more attention to him and the first year, especially when he called her ace-chan.
"I think I'm estimating you just fine," Kimiko replied, turning to face the tall boy and stemming her hands in her hips, a soft frown of irritation resting on her face.
"To me it looks like you're trying to evaluate your worth as a 'powerful' player in challenging me to a match, thinking if you beat an old prodigy that you're going to be so much more powerful and that your greatness and talent will be confirmed. Well, I'd like to inform you that I am still as good as back then, despite what happened. I'm still fully capable of beating a stuck up, Tokyo, rich-kid city boy who doesn't know his place and acts like he owns and knows everything."
Kuroo looked quite taken aback at her response, a lot of the boys mirroring the surprise, while some actually had the nerve to laugh or try and hold a laugh back. Daichi and Sugawara shared a glance before snickering, both of them knowing full well just what Kuroo has gotten himself into.
Once Kimiko was fired up there's no holding her back.
"You want a match? Fine, you get one. After warm up I'm choosing my team and you choose yours. But don't think I'll pity you in any way when you're lying on the ground and crying in defeat because you lost against a girl leading a team, because I won't."
Kuroo slowly started to smirk, hiding his irritation that way and trying to act nonchalant when he said "Alright, but don't expect me to go easy on you."
Kimiko raised a brow and replied "In the time that we're warming up, maybe you should go out and see if you can buy some intelligence. It might not seem that way but I don't really enjoy insulting the empty minded."
And with that, the conversation was over for Kimiko and she went to join her team to begin warming up, before she would choose a team to stomp Kuroo and his arrogance into the ground.
