Working night shift at a hospital wasn't Sam Winchester's first job/career idea. A lawyer had been his main dream for as long as he could remember- until his mother passed away; a fatal car accident that the doctors could do nothing about... so helping people and working hard hours became the norm.
Everyone Sam knew questioned why he worked the night shift. There were multiple answers to their questions, but he only stuck to one: "They're less people to worry about at night, I've just got to make sure the patients are okay."
"Hey, Winchester, Dr. Novak requested some coffee and he wanted me to tell you." The woman at the front desk, Meg, called to the taller man. Their was a little glint in her eyes that said something a little more of that.
Sam lowered the book he had been reading, giving her the bitch-face. He knew exactly what she was pushing out at him- and he didn't appreciate that response. "Shut up, Meg."
Another reason Sam likes working the night shift is that he works along side Dr. Gabriel Novak. He's one of the doctors who worked in internal medicine always worked the night shift. He's also someone that Sam's been eyeing for quite a while.
Another thing about Sam is that he's always the one taking Dr. Novak his coffee. The doctor had actually been the one asking for him to pour a sweet cup and bring it to his office.
"You're the first nurse to bring the sugar and creamer with you. I think I'll stick with you, Moose."
There was also a lot of flirting that passed between them. The other doctors and nurses were all well-aware of each compliment and line said to the other, and it was mostly Sam that was teased about it. Dr. Novak knew what he was doing and was proud of it... and he would later tease the nurse about his cherry face and reactions.
A small part of Sam wanted to see if the doctor would go out for a cup of coffee outside of work. Another part of him poked at the fact Dr. Novak would tease him constantly- so all they did back and forth could just be simple teasing, nothing real.
Damn, he felt like a girl in high school— or a boy whose been crushing on another boy and feared rejection. The second one seemed more legit.
"Meg, where's Dr. Novak?" Sam asked, tapping a finger against the side of his leg. He just wanted to go back to his book, even if he was going to see that sexy-but-teasing internal medicine doctor.
The front desk secretary pointed to the left, where the doctor was actually walking their way. "I'll be right back, Godzilla."
"Hey! Winchester! You got my coffee." Dr. Novak grinned, shoving his clipboard under his arm. "Made just like I like it?" Sam nodded. "Made with love?"
Sam's face flushed a cherry red, his eyes trailing to the floor. He didn't have an answer to that one.
The doctor chuckled. "I'll take that as a yes, seems like a reasonable thing for us, huh?" He stood on his tip-toes, pecking Sam's cheek while taking the paper cup. "Thanks champ."
With widened eyes, Sam froze in his stance. The expression on his face made Dr. Novak laugh harder, dropping his head back. "Oh, Samsquatch- you kill me every time. I wonder if I can get some other faces from you!"
'C'mon Sam, say something! Anything!' "Why don't you take me to dinner first, t-then maybe you can figure it out." 'That was smooth as fuck, Sam. Good job.'
That made the doctor speechless, as well as his face very red. The coffee nearly slipped from his fingers, but Sam was able to take it before it could.
"Cat got your tongue, doctor?" It was slightly amusing to see him speechless, Dr. Novak always had something to say- no matter what.
His silence didn't last long, as did his facial expression. "Date and time, I know an excellent bar 'round the corner."
Sam's upper lip twitched, his amusing expression fades to one of shock and the slightest bit of thanks. "I'm working the day shift on Wednesday, 9-5. I'll be free after my shift."
"I've got the day shift as well, after work sounds excellent." Dr. Novak winked, taking his coffee once more. "How does that sound, Sammy?"
Sam smiled widely. "Sounds great, doctor. Thank you."
The doctor kissed his cheek again. "Gabriel, okay? Call me Gabriel."
With that, the doctor made his way back to his office. His thoughts all leaned toward what would happen in two days... both their thoughts leaned toward that.
Both parties had been waiting for quite a while for this to happen. And it was finally coming up for them.
