Finally, I was sixteen and I was on a movie set that I was actually contributing for — Inception.
It all started at our annual holiday party my family hosts, inviting friends of the family, and fortunately for me they were mostly directors. Unlike my sisters, Olivia and Sophia, who were telling guests about what they were asking my parents for Christmas, I was busy mingling across the room with my portfolio in my hand and my father by my side. After talking to Christopher Nolan for no longer than fifteen minutes, I was shaking his hand. He had agreed to let me take professional stills for his new movie Inception.
He was a very kind man, I had joked about being adopted randomly and he laughed then smoothly brought up the fact he had been raised by an American mother and a British father, and his family spent time in both Chicago and London. He asked about where I had grown up before coming to America but I wasn't completely sure (something about memory loss cause by trauma unfortunately), my father quickly helped me out and told Christopher I was originally from Italy.
"Ah yes, the country of art and literature and wine," he chuckled.
A smile came onto my lips which evolved into a laugh. It had been hard for me to joke about my home country, and me being a quiet person that uses humour to deflect from my beautiful empty heart. But anyway...
When it came to my first day on set all I could think about was how happy I was just watching the world go by. They were doing an airport scene to begin with in which I was told every single cast member would be there, although I hadn't been told who they were, my hands were still shaking.
To occupy myself I looked through my camera bag, fiddled with my film cartridges and lenses, putting a roll of film on and deciding to go with the 50mm lens, the fitting it to my Olympus film camera, one my father had passed down to me from when he was younger.
I tried it out and looked through the viewfinder, putting the strap around my neck.
"Y/n?" I heard behind me.
I lowered the camera and turned around. "Leo?" Across the room from me was Leo, the man I hadn't seen in what must have been seven or eight years, and once again we were in an airport.
He walked quickly towards me and pulled me closer to him wrapping his arms around me. His embrace was warm, and his big, strong arms seemed very protective when wrapped around my frail body.
The world around me melted away as I squeezed him back, not wanting the moment to end. Despite the heaviness in my stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of my body pressed against his. I sunk into the warmth of his side. His touch made the room warmer somehow, my future within its walls seeming a little less bleak.
"I've not seen you in forever, what are you doing here? How are you?" He asked releasing from the embrace. "How've you been? And what happened with high school I read somewhere that you graduated early?"
"I've been great," lie. "I'm taking pictures for Christopher, I basically begged him for it," I laughed.
"Wow, first name basis, you must be very important," he joked.
"Yeah I graduated a couple years early, when I was thirteen, before we first met for catch me if you can, I had enough credit and I wanted to start all this."
"That's amazing, I knew you were smart but wow," he chuckled. "Let me introduce you to everyone." As we walked over, Leo had a grasp of my hand, knowing that I was a nervous person and usually needed a hand to start a conversation.
"Everyone this is Y/n," He said. "A good friend of mine."
Standing in front of me was pretty much my entire childhood and what had shaped me into who I was today.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt from 10 Things I Hate About You, Ellen Page from Juno, Tom Hardy from Bronson, Cillian Murphy from The Dark Knight, one of my favourite movies. But lets not forget about fucking Leonardo Dicaprio from fucking titanic, my favourite fucking movie since I fucking moved to America (sorry for my profanity.)
They all introduced themselves casually, their first names only, saying it was nice to meet me, putting out a hand to shake while they did it.
"Can I just say, this is the most amazing moment in my life," I said, totally nonchalant, receiving a laugh from the four of them and Leo.
"I thought meeting me was the most amazing moment of your life," Leo said.
"Leo, your a C-lister at best," I joked, causing him and the rest of them to laugh.
"Shut up," he said, trying to hide his smile.
[also just pretend the timeline makes sense going from catch me if you can to inception in a year rather than eight lol]
