Dear Charity,
I have kept quiet for too long. When did you grow so beautiful? I saw you laughing today with your brother and I realized that I had never seen another girl as lovely as you. I heard everyone is dying for your brother, well, I'm dying for you.

Love,
Your Secret Admirer.

Charity had never been more confused in her life. The first thing she did was ask Tochukwu who gave it to him and he said the same thing he told her when he gave it to her. She was sure she knew all her classmates' handwritings and this one was unfamiliar so she assumed it was a dull trick and kept the letter in the desk. It was even dated two days before. Why would she waste her time worrying about who must have written it?

On Monday the next week, she found another letter. This time, it was in her school bag and she saw it when she was ransacking the bag for an extra pen during the last class of the day. She distractedly opened it only to see that clear writing that did not bother her before.

19th January, 2019

Dear Charity,
I went to Spar today. I rarely do. But I thought of your cute dimples when I picked it. I'm thinking of you a lot, these days. I cannot wait to see you next week.

Love,
Your Secret Admirer.

She hated when someone called her dimples cute. Dimples on Laurence looked cute but on her, it looked basic. She shook her head and checked her bag for any unusual thing that could be the gift. She found nothing and concluded, yet again, that someone was just fooling around with her, probably to see her reaction. She could bet her day's share of lunch money that the person sat there watching her instead of paying attention to the boring C.R.K. teacher.

Ten minutes after the bell was rung, the teacher was still calling out Bible passages that should be read and given reports on then the security officer of the school appeared at the door. When the teacher noticed him, he walked in and whispered to him.

'Charity Wokoma?' The teacher called.

She froze. Did her father come to pick them? Was Laurence missing? Was he in trouble? Was she in trouble? She stood.

The security officer came to her and gave her a fancy paper bag, the types she only saw in foreign movies.

'From who?'

'The man say den send am.' Then he was off.

She sat and peered into the bag.

'Also read Romans chapter....'

The teacher continued but she paid him no notice and she was sure the rest of the class did not too. The bag held a small red fluffy Teddy bear and nothing else. She kept the bag on the floor beside her seat and faced the teacher.

The walk home was quiet. For about an hour after school, final year students had a brief seminar from an ex-student so she had to wait for Laurence and while that was going on, word got round that she had received a gift from an admirer. She could not read her brother's expression when she met him but she knew he had heard and he was not happy about it. She ambled ahead of him to avoid his questioning glare.

At home, she could not concentrate on her assignments and he noticed that because they shared the dining table for studying.

'Where's the gift?' He asked in a low voice when he noted their mother had gone in allow them concentrate.

'Hmm?' She bit her pen cover and did not meet his eyes.

'Abeg, no dey do like mumu. You know what I'm talking about. I heard---'

'Before you start to conclude, it was a joke.' She cut him off.

'What was a joke?'

'Whatever you heard.' She feigned interest in her textbook before her.

He muttered a quiet okay and left the issue. If she did not want to talk about it, he would not bother her but if anything like it came up again, he would ignore her and get to the bottom of it.
