Dear Charity,
I escorted my sister to Oil Mill Market today after school. It was very tiring. As I got back, I soaked myself in a warm bath, the way you see them do in the movies. I feel better now. I heard you dumped my gift at the back of your class. I guess you did not like it. So I got you something else, nothing fancy, just this black T-shirt with a funny cartoon print. It looked creative and outstanding so I picked it. I hope you like it.

Love,
Your Secret Admirer.

After she read this one and saw the wrapped shirt in her desk, she went to the front of the class before the next teacher could come in.

'Please, if you are the one sending these stuff, thank you but I don't want them. Whether it's a joke or not, abeg, stop. I'm serious.'

But her secret admirer did not really understand that because on Tuesday, the next week, she got another letter after she came back from a class in the Cyber Café. It was taped to her desk and unfortunately, her classmates got to read it before she did.

Dear Charity,
I love you! I realised that when I saw you get flogged on Thursday. I felt so pained and at the same time so proud, you did not shed even a tear. But even if, I noticed your flawless fair skin redden because of the pain. But why would you leave the notes on the table like that instead of sharing them person to person? Did I mention I see you in my dreams now? I really love you, babe, I swear it. I love how quiet you are in class. I love your tiny lips. I love those wide eyes. I love those slight curves that are coming out. I love those fair legs, although I don't see much of them again because your skirts are longer now. I'm sorry I couldn't get you any gift today, most shops are closed. Happy Sunday, by the way.

Love,
Your Secret Admirer.

She raged in front of the class.

'Stop, please. I'm tired of this. Keep your feelings to yourself.'

'Have you ever thought that this person may not be from our class?' A random person voiced.

She had thought about that but she was sure it was only her classmates who were in class when Mr. Joshua flogged her because one inane person forgot to pick up her note and got it missing. Who still forgets about their Literature note when it carried more marks than the tests because the teacher was too lazy to ever write a complete sentence on the board and so commanded the students to form their note?

This letter was even more embarrassing than the others. It shamed her so, she was about to put her head down and cry when Mr. Joshua walked in for his class. She held her head high, reminding herself that this man would never see her tears. He had successfully graduated from not being her favourite person to being her worst teacher after Thursday and to think that it was because of him a psycho in her class was writing nonsense to her.

Dear Charity,
I made you angry. You almost cried, I could see it, but you didn't. My strong girl. Anyways, I want to apologise for making you angry but I will not apologise for the way you make me feel. Have you been to a beach? I have, once, in Lagos. I didn't really like it though. There was too much sand and the sun was scorching. Well, I dreamed of you last night. We were at the beach, just the two of us. The water was blue and friendly and the sun wasn't prepared to kill. It was just like those American films. It was perfect. You are perfect. To show I'm really sorry, I put in a good word or two for you. Come Friday, we'll celebrate, my love. Cheers!

Love,
Your Secret Admirer.

There was a box of a perfume collection, a silver chain bracelet and a Johanna Lindsey classic novel on her desk when she left her brother. The whole class was quiet as she entered and all eyes were on her, she had imagined it was because of the prefect position she was given and she was ready to announce that she did not want it then she saw her desk of gifts. She sighed and strode to her desk. Her classmates were polite enough to wait for her to open the letter and read it with her before they began the hullabaloo.

At lunch break, Laurence sent a junior student to tell her meet him in front of the library. She took measured steps because she knew he would be angrier than the last time.

'Tell me everything and leave no bit out.' He gritted his teeth.

She did. She included how uncomfortable the whole situation made her feel, how disconcerting the letters were, how paranoid she was getting, knowing that someone was constantly studying her to the point of reading her well and how gravely she wanted her classmates to understand that she found nothing about this amusing at all. She talked about how the word was spreading and how people were coming up with different theories and making up lies. She bent her head and finally let her tears roll down.

'I've never done anything to any boy in my class to make him like me this way. I thought it was a joke at first and that some of my classmates had planned it to play me but this has gone too far. I just want them to leave me alone. I'm already having a hard time dealing with the many subjects we're offering and now everyone's constantly poking me in class, I can't even concentrate.' She sobbed.

Laurence hugged her and told her to stop crying.

'Where are the letters?'

She sniffed, 'I kept them in case I needed a clue that will help me to catch him.'

'Good. We'll search for the nincompoop together.' He was very sure he sounded like a hero with that line but he heard her give a little laugh. 'What?'

'No one says that anymore.'
