Mega's POV

Pouring out all of my despair, misery and helplessness in a wild, agonizing cry that shook the walls, I dashed out into the pouring rain.

Like you'd expect, I was soon soaked from head to toe, wet clothing clinginging on to me and weighing me down, making each step more tiresome– and the water on my glasses only disoriented me more. Occasional but violent bursts of thunder echoed in my skull, and so many droplets were falling that the sound blurred into one long, whirring noise. All around me people instinctively hurried into shelter, hiding under hoods and umbrellas, but I continued my blind walk, a journey with only one purpose: getting away.

At the back of my mind, a somewhat sane voice of reason told me that blindly running from responsibilities was a plan that I knew was predestined to fail, and that I should turn back and fix everything. But my skin burned with the cold, the dull pain growing unbearable, and the once occasional sharp stabs turning more frequent– and so my primeval survival instincts took over.

The rain continued, oblivious to my problems, and so I was again faced with the question of where I was to spend the night.

It wasn't the first time I've had to sleep on the streets. I was used to finding the sorts of places you can safely spend the night at, so I had no trouble finding a semi-abandoned, dilapidated building where I made myself a luxurious lodging of empty cardboard boxes. The stale air strongly stenched of alcohol, urine and trash, but standards get lower as you get more desperate– it was dry, relatively warm, and I was alone, and that was more than enough.

It took me forever to fall asleep, but when I did, a weak smile was plastered on my face as I thought about Zelk.

A few hours later, I jerked awake, blinking a few times. I half-expectied to be at Zak's apartment, but my whereabouts were the exact opposite: gloomy, uninhabited, and cold, I noticed as I shivered. There was a ringing in my ears, which I aggressively tried to shake off before realizing that its source was a vibrating phone.

I pulled out the thin piece of metal –the latest model, courtesy of Zak– and wiped it from the dirt with the back of my sleeve. "Bald diamond man" flashed on the glowing screen, and I pressed 'accept', mentally preparing myself for every worst-case scenario.

Immediately, I was greeted with his voice, which sounded extremely regretful and dejected.

"Mega! Oh, Mega! Thank god you picked up! Are you ok? No, of course– Where did you even go for the night– anyway, what I meant to say was: I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Noah–" at this point, Zak took a pause from his monologue to catch a breath.

"Look, Zak, you're such an idiot– but it's okay, really, it's fine..." I tried my best to hold back a yawn. Despite having just woken up, I tried to mask my emotions– it was neither okay nor fine, and never will be. But for the sake of our friendship, I'll at least make it seem so.

"I'm sorry, I really am. I know I shouldn't have kissed you, I just–... I've just always wanted to do it–" Zak quietly sobbed. "Anyway, I promise I won't try to do something like that ever again," he assured, his voice cracking. I have never witnessed him in a state like this, and I felt sorry for the younger boy.

"It's fine, Zak, it's fine, it's fine..." I repeated the words over and over, not quite sure what else to say.

"Oh, and before I forget: nine one two, six four five, seven eight seven nine" Zak blurted, probably trying to change the topic of the conversation on purpose.

"...what?"

"Zelk's number, thought you'd want it," it sounded like Zak wiggled his eyebrows.
