REMI'S POV
"Is everything alright here?"
My body was drained of the comforting touches from Gray and Trent, their heat no longer warming my cold skin. Swiveling my body around, I met Bennett's gaze, his arms crossed, and eyes etched with concern and threatening glares. The usual playful bartended lacked any ounce of humor he once possessed minutes prior when we were wheezing at the dinner table. Instead, he was serious, too serious for my comfort.
Gray moved from behind my body to my front, obscuring my vision, almost blocking the sight of Bennett entirely. His gesture was protective as his shoulders stood broad and firm, then matching Bennett's stance by crossing his arms. Muscles bulged under the tight, white dress shirt he wore despite the few buttons that were undone. I could easily outline every crevice and protruding stronghold that was tense.
I took a deep breath as I placed my hand on Gray's arm, his eyes once harsh now softer as they fell on me. The corners of my mouth tilted upward slightly, reassuring him I could handle my own even though I was already positive he'd not let me do as such. In the short amount of time I've grown to know Gray, it was easy to tell not only was he the King of his pride, also like a protective bear of his cubs. Instead, I wasn't his cub, I was Remi.
Although foreign like him, the feeling fulfilled a locked portion of my heart, once a black void now consumed by him and Trent. It was unfamiliar territory he was treading on with such simplicity as he was born to do this. Potentially, maybe he and Trent were natural-born protectors. Gray, although unpredictable, was a warrior in disguise already coming to my aid even when it wasn't needed. He didn't need to protect me from Bennett, he was one of my closest friends. With or without that knowledge, I was convinced his reaction would be the same for either scenario. I liked it.
"Rem?"
Breaking my short trance with Gray, I diverted my attention to Bennett. "I'm okay, Ben, don't worry. I got it covered."
