If You Love Me...
From The Point of View of Xavier James
It was late at night, around One O'clock in the morning when felt Ben slowly get out of the bed. My best guess was that he was going to get a drink of water or go use the restroom. But that did not happen. Thankfully, the room was so dark, that Ben could not see me watching him. I watched him slowly put on a sweatsuit, slip on a pair of shoes and leave the room with the stealth of a ninja. Even though he told me he was handling business downtown at the warehouse I decided I wanted to see for myself. I needed to make sure it was nothing more, nothing less. I needed reassurance for what was going on because Ben has been damn near nonexistent for hours at a time for the past week.
I hopped out of the bed about fifteen minutes later. I went to the window and peeped outside, making sure he was gone, after that I threw on a wife-beater, a pair of sweat pants and a pair of white Nike Air Force Ones. I wasn't the most glamourous tonight, but that didn't matter, I needed to see what was Ben up to this early in the morning. I grabbed my phone and I pulled up the tracker that we both have installed our phones for emergency purposes. I looked at a map that showed me Ben's location. He was on the interstate heading downtown in the direction of the warehouse district. So far he was being honest. After I brushed my hair, I grabbed my keys and I headed for my car downstairs. Once I arrived at my car, I opened the trunk and I searched for my gun. I hid it from Ben because it was for emergency purposes and I didn't want to hear him complaining about how I did not need a gun. After searching for a few minutes, I grabbed it from a hidden compartment, and I stuck it in my pants. I did not know what I was getting myself into, so I needed protection.
I silently said a prayer before I cranked up my car. I prayed that I would be safe and I also prayed for the safety of Ben. As I put the car in reverse, I began to have second thoughts about this...I wondered if I should leave all of this alone? Should I just go back in the house and leave ben to handle whatever business he was tending to? I sat with both hands on the wheel, and my foot on the break as I thought for a few seconds. Finally, I reversed and I backed out of the garage, I was on my way to see what was going on downtown.
After thirty minutes, I arrived just outside of downtown in a disreputable area known for sex trafficking, drugs, and prostitution. What the fuck could Ben be doing in this part of town? I knew he was torturing Cam and my Uncle, but I thought it would've been in a different area. I pulled out my phone and the app showed me that he was in a building that stood just before me, a few yards away. I held onto my gun tightly as I walked toward the building. I prepared myself for the unimaginable. I was ready for anything that presented itself within this building. I did not enter the building through the front entrance because that would have been too obvious, so I walked to the back, and thankfully, there was a door that was unlocked.
I walked into the building with my gun up and ready to shoot, just like they do in Law and Order SUV. Once I was in, I did not let my guard down at all. I snuck through the building with the stealth of a jaguar. I was virtually undetected. Or at least I thought I was... I heard sounds from the levels above me, I heard the agonizing screams of two men, one of the screams sounded very familiar, I was instantly struck with fear as I continued a slow climb up a dimly lit stairwell. As I arrived on the top floor, I had to stop in my tracks, catch my breath, and prepare myself for what lies behind the door I stood at. I was fully aware of my surroundings and thankfully no one was in sight.
