Red and blue lights catch my attention as the taxi comes to a halt in front of my building complex, I pause as we both look out the window. Police and ambulance cars litter the front parking lot, all of the buildings residents are standing around being interviewed by the police.
"Thanks." I quickly hand my driver the tip and slowly make my way over to the crowd, I have to move through the thickening crowd of onlookers. I come to a line of police tape. I duck under it.
"Excuse me ma'am please get on the other side." A female police officer comes over, gently grabbing me by the arm.
"I live in this apartment, thank you." I pull my arm from her grip and walk over to the other people. I didn't know them all personally but there was one face I couldn't find.
"Where's Margie?" I ask aimlessly, a male police officer points his flashlight at me. I squint and hold my hand up to block the glare.
"There's been an accident. I'd like to ask you a few questions." I follow him as he leads me to a less crowded spot, he lowers the flash light.
"What's happened? Where's Margie?" I ask, crossing my arms over my chest to keep the chill away. The crowd around me hums but it does nothing to ease the bone gripping chill.
"Margie has been murdered and we're looking for some leads or any information that can help." He pulls out a notepad and pen, I stare at him shocked.
"I only saw her the other night. I was meant to go over and have dinner with her tongiht." He jots this down.
"Did anything seem strange? Amiss? Did you know her well?" He questions.
"No not really, we'd have a cup of tea together a few times but she didn't have any family or friends that visited, if they did I didn't see them."
"Right, and can you account for your whereabouts last night?" I blink slowly, confused. Did they think I did it?
"I was in my apartment down the hall from hers, it was just me and my cat and then I've been at work all day today."
"Any suspicious noises?"
"No."
"Any reason—"
"That's enough questions for now, I'm sure Mrs Alexander here has had a long enough day." A familiar, deep voice says from behind me. My body goes rigid as I see Kayden step beside me, his hands are in his pockets.
"Yes Mr Branchwood, my apologies. It will be another five before you can return to your apartments. Please call if you think of anything else." The male officer nods once and leaves. I go to as well, I was not being around this asshole again.
"Shay, wait." He says, ready to follow. I spin around and point my finger at him, poking into his chest.
"Don't. I don't want to fucking know, leave me alone." I growl, pure anger the only thing I force myself to feel for him. His eyebrows go up in surprise, he looks between my face and my finger and I hate myself for still finding myself so attracted to him.
"What?"
"You have a girlfriend you cheating asshole, leave me alone. Or have you come to make me pay for that as well?" I growl, I lower my hand and spin around aiming for the crowd of other residents. Margie had been murdered which meant there's a killer on the loose. To my dismay I hear his footsteps follow me.
"Let me explain." He whispers angrily, coming to my side. He grabs my arm lightly and steers us towards the side of the building into the shadows.
"I don't want to hear your pathetic excuse." I spit, pulling my arm away. He backs me up against the wall and encases me there with his body and muscular arms. His light blue shirt tightens, rising up from under his buckled pants.
"It's not what you think."
"Are you a nut job? You have a girlfriend!" I exclaim, slamming my hands onto his chest. His grey eyes search mine, his hair is a mess and for once I notice the strain around his tired eyes.
"Yes but—"
"But nothing, oh my god I feel like the biggest idiot in my life." I groan, the anger turning inwards to me. He frowns.
"Why should you? You've done nothing wrong, we were both drunk and gave into temptation. My relationship hasn't been in a good spot for the last few months, and I am sorry I used you as a way to help me forget."
"Great, because that's meant to make me feel so much better." My anger is still there but not as fierce as the sadness that has begun to replace it.
"I'm sorry I wasn't trying to hurt you, I didn't know how to explain the next morning so I left. I didn't realise how much of a jerk move that was." He leans his forehead down to mine, resting it there. I rest my hands on his chest, breathing in his cologne and minty breath as they mingle together at the closeness.
"Look I'm sorry your relationship isn't in a good spot but you need to leave me alone Kayden, I'm serious. This can't happen again." Already though a part of me was caving into him, I ached to touch him and to feel him touch me again.
"I don't know if I can leave you alone." He whispers, I look into his eyes and my breath falters. I had to admit to myself he had been on my mind since he'd left. Even when he'd dropped me home I'd been disappointed, I couldn't deny the physical and mental chemistry we had.
"Please." I don't know what I'm asking for, but when his lips hesitantly touch mine I can't resist. My arms snake around his neck and pull him closer to me, he leans his body against mine into the rough stone wall behind me.
A free hand leaves the wall and trails up my skirt, skimming the line of my underwear. I begin to heat up and deepen the kiss, letting our tongues intertwine.
I reach down one hand and feel his ever growing erection, I undo his belt swiftly and slide my hand into his pants. He groans into my mouth and takes my bottom lip between his teeth, this is what we knew. This is what we were good at.
He has a girlfriend Shay, you can't do this.
How would you feel if you were her?
You're as bad as Blake.
That last thought makes me pull away from our kiss, although the fire he'd created still burns feverishly inside of me I take my hand from his pants.
I push him back off of me, he steps back surprised; his dark eyebrows shoot up. I watch as he adjusts his pants and I push my thighs together to relieve the pressure building.
I pull my skirt down and fix my hair, I turn and leave him there.
"Where are you going?" He calls, I feel his steps coming up hot behind me, I raise my middle finger towards him without looking back.
"Go to hell." I shout back, a few onlookers watch me with curious eyes as I return to the light. We were allowed back into the building, I head in and overhear that Margie's funeral was going to be Friday.
I go to my apartment, looking sadly at Margie's tapped over door. I lock the door behind me; that could have been me. I put my handbag and jumper down, turning the lights on. I go over to the window and look out, my heart sky rockets as I see Kayden standing there and looking up at me.
Shay: Go away.
Kayden: Make me.
I sigh as I pull the curtains shut, blocking him and my ever growing fondness for him out. I had to forget about him, this could not happen again. He has a girlfriend.
I undo my blouse as I head to the shower; I look at myself in the mirror. I was going to put myself back out there and prove to myself Kayden was merely a fling that had unfortunately stuck to me like gum to the bottom of a shoe.
