The rest of the week flies by me in a blur, the word of Margie's murder rattles everyone in the community. There were still no leads as to who had done this and if they'd strike again, I had a fear that they'd be back.
I now lived alone on that floor; I doubt anyone would be interested in moving onto my level anytime soon. I'd avoided doing my usual crime show routine and had decided to keep it light and stick to cartoons.
I'm now standing at Margie's funeral, a lot of the community had come today to show their support. She was a sweet little old lady who didn't deserve this. One hand holds onto Caity's while the other grips tissues. I was always emotional when it came to funerals, I could feel everyone's sadness and it became unbearable.
Although I hadn't received any more texts from Kayden, I could see him clearly from where I was standing although he couldn't see me. His dark hair was groomed back and he was wearing a black suit with a white shirt underneath. I hated him for looking so good.
I try not to focus on him but find my eyes still drifting back to him, I hadn't told Caity about our little run in. I wipe more tears away as they begin the ceremony, a framed photo sits on a wooden stand beside her dark brown coffin. Her dimple smile seems to shine through the portrait, they had to find who did this to her. If they wouldn't, I will.
My heart plummets when I look back to Kayden to find a beautiful blonde standing beside him, her slim waist is hugged by her knee length black dress. She was far skinnier and curvier than I was, with bigger breasts as well.
My mind wanders to the memory of how tenderly he'd sucked on mine, playing and teasing my nipples. I shake the thoughts from my mind, I'm at a damn funeral.
The girlfriend has one arm linked with his, she looks around bored. Kayden doesn't look too pleased as she keeps murmuring to him, rolling her eyes at him. I narrow my eyes...is that Maddi?!
She lowers her sunglasses over her eyes and pulls her phone out and my blood begins to boil. I didn't want to cause a scene in front of everyone but how disrespectful could she be?
"Why are you so tense?" Caity whispers, I look over to her red rimmed eyes. We were both as emotional as each other.
"Kayden is here with his girlfriend and she's on her phone, so disrespectful. She's also Maddi that's doing the cover for next months novel." I nod my head towards them, she was now talking on the phone; her conversation drifting and interrupting the priest.
"No fucking way." Caity gasps, pulling down her sunglasses to stare. We both look at them, if Maddi wanted to have a photo shoot with Kayden I was sure to die right then and there. Mahlia would know it was all a stitch up. I'd never live this down.
I shouldn't have gotten this damned escort.
I try and focus on the rest of the ceremony, I more than anything wanted to shut her up; for Margie's sake and my own.
I couldn't though, I'd fucked her boyfriend on the weekend and had made out with him only a few days before. This whole thing was a mess.
The priests finishes and they begin to lower the coffin into the ground with soft piano playing in the background, I walk forward and grab a red rose from the basket and go over to the hole.
I stare blankly down at it as my tears fall down my cheeks, that would be everyone I loved one day. A warm hand presses on my shoulder, I look up to find Kayden looking down at me with sad eyes. He'd been crying as well.
My bottom lip quivers as I look away, I let go of the rose and stand. Moving away from him, I did not need this right now. I needed fresh air and to breath.
I leave the crowd and noise behind; I'd come and done what I needed. I send Caity a text and tell her to meet me at her car, caught up in my emotions I don't notice Kayden walking beside me.
"What are you doing?" I ask, defeated. I don't bother looking at him.
"I was coming to make sure you're okay."
"I'll be fine." I mumble, gripping my tissues harder.
"I'm sorry about Margie, I'll make sure they get to the bottom of this." He says softly, we come to a stop at the front of the car park.
"Look can we maybe get coffee tomorrow and talk? I really would like to apologise and I would love if we could be friends." I finally look up at him, wanting more than anything to wrap my arms around him. I resist the temptation and wrap them around myself.
"I don't think that's a good idea." I say, taking a step back. How were we meant to be friends? It would never happen.
"Shay please."
"Don't"
"Don't what?" A high pitched feminie voice says to our left, I startle and turn towards his girlfriend. Her blue eyes are rimmed with eyeliner and her plump red lips take the attention away from her button nose.
"Hey Maddi, I was just leaving." I offer, giving her an awkward smile. She slides next to Kayden and eyes me warily, scrutinizing me.
"Hey Shay. Okay then, are you ready babe?" She asks, looking back up to Kayden. His jaw tightens but he doesn't take his eyes off me.
"Bye Kayden." I nod to her and turn and leave, practically running away from them. When I reach the car I turn to see them walking away, Kayden looks back over his shoulder once. His eyes catch mine, I look away, I couldn't do this.
Not today.
