I finish the final touches to my makeup and my hair, I'd decided to straighten it and go with simple eyeshadow. Caity and I were going out for a few drinks, Mack was out of town for the weekend with work and we both needed a distraction from the funeral. I also needed to put myself out there and try to see if I could find anyone interesting.
My black mid-thigh dress hugs my figure, crisscrossing between my breasts. I pull on a thin black cardigan and pull my black lace heels on. I quickly send Caity a text and let her know we're meeting at the Metro.
I flag down a taxi and enjoy the heated car ride in silence, after a few drinks I knew the cold was going to be the least of my worries. I pay the driver and step out onto the curb, I look over the Metro. It was a two story high bar, the bottom level was more for dinners whereas the top level was the club.
I make my way up the black stairs, I turn the corner and enter a wide open space; to my left are three pool tables and to my right is the bar and seats and tables.
"Can I get a CC dry please?" I ask, coming up to the bar. The girl behind it takes my card and makes my drink, I nod my thanks and make my way out to the open balcony. I take a seat on the balcony that overlooks the city around me, traffic is at its peak and people flow in and out of the surrounding bars.
I take a sip of my drink and pull out my phone, I scroll through Facebook aimlessly. I wonder what Kayden would be doing tonight, if he'd be with his girlfriend. If he wasn't happy with her I don't know why he'd be with her.
I type in his name in the search bar and click on the first profile, his profile picture is a photo of him at a conference meeting; a charming smile on his lips.
I scroll down, glad to see he hasn't made it private. I click on his girlfriend's name.
Maddi Henderson.
Unfortunately his girlfriend has made her account private, her profile picture is a photo of her and Kayden. Their arms are wrapped around each other and he's smiling down at her. Yeah, right. So unhappy. I click out of the profile and put my phone away, I wasn't here to ruin my own night before it began.
I finish my drink and order another two, Caity shows up just as I take a seat. She's wearing a white flowing playsuit with her hair down in waves, white chunky heels and she's covered in silver jewellery.
She sits beside me and puts her beer down.
"Gross, how can you drink that." I scrunch my nose up at her, I never understood how girls could drink beer. I couldn't stand it.
"Um easy, you're just weak."
"Yeah that too. Did Mack arrive safely?" I ask, sipping my CC. My phone dings in my handbag, I actively ignore it.
"Yeah he did, he had to go too Philadelphia. He should be returning Monday hopefully." I'd never been before but I'd love to travel.
"Oh that's good then, how are you two?" She looks down at her drink and sighs, stirring the cup slightly. This couldn't be good.
"I don't know... we're so great sometimes and the others it's like we're two different people. I think he's scared that we moved in too fast and I don't know how to let him know it's okay if he wants to move out." They'd been together for six months when they'd moved in together, she was so happy about it at the start but it's a gamble to make with a relationship so fresh. I'd been with Blake three years before we'd got our own place together.
"Have you tried talking to him?"
"I don't know how, like how would I start that conversation? I don't want him to think I'm breaking up with him but I don't want to lose him. It's so hard." I reach out and rub her shoulder, I knew exactly what she meant.
"I wouldn't stress about it too much at the moment, when he comes back you should sit him down and have a talk." I offer my advice, I just wanted her to be happy and he was something that made her happy. She finishes her beer off and slams the empty glass down.
"Right! Let's get some tequila shots." I groan as she goes to the bar, she brings back six tequila shots, lime and salt.
"God, on the count of three." I say.
"One."
"Two."
"Three."
We lick the salt, shot them back, it burns my throat and I gag as I squeeze the lime in my mouth. She scrunches her face up beside me, these were going to roll us tonight.
We finish the other two shots off easily, I'm down to one CC. She'd already ordered another two beers.
"So what are you going to do about Kayden?" She asks, more people had joined us on the balcony and the cub was beginning to fill up.
"Nothing, he's not my problem."
"Uh I think he is." She taps me on the shoulder, I move around in my seat to see where she's looking; Kayden strolls through the club with Maddi at his side. They go straight to the bar. He's wearing more casual attire, black jeans and back top that hugs his muscles.
"Great." I growl, turning back to look out the balcony.
"She is giving you some serious stink eye." Caity whispers, leaning in close. I sit up a bit taller, my vision was already blurry on the edges and I was starting to reach that tipsy high.
"Let's show them." Caity grabs my arm and drags me back inside, my eyes find Kayden's as he turns around holding two drinks. They widen as he takes me in, I look away before I can do anything else.
Music blasts through the speakers and Caity and I squeeze onto the middle of the dance floor. I forget about Kayden and move with her to the music. Dance Monkey by Tones and I comes on, and I squeal.
"I've never seen anybody do the things you do before!" Caity and I sing along, shouting the lyrics at each other. I sway my hips and feel hands grip them, I turn to see a rather attractive male holding onto me. His features blur sightly but I make out his shaggy blonde hair and blue eyes.
I lean back into him and move my hips back into him, I open my eyes to find Kayden's fixated on me. The fury in them makes me move more into the man behind me, I reach back and run my hand through his hair. I can't see Caity anymore; she must have gone to get another drink.
Kayden leans casually back against the table he's at, he smirks at me as Maddie comes over to him. She wraps her arms around his shoulders.
He doesn't take his eyes off of me as he kisses her.
I burn with anger and sadness as I watch her kiss him, my bottom lip trembles and I wrench myself out of the guys arms and storm out of the bar. I fumble for my phone and try and call Caity, she doesn't answer.
"God. God." I whisper, I feel so stupid. What was I hoping to achieve? He would win every game he tried to play with me, every single time.
I flag down a taxi, half stumbling into it. I read a text from Caity telling me she'd found a few of the other girls, I let her know I'm heading home.
I lean my head on the glass window as the cab takes me home.
