Hailey. The sound of hammers hitting wood filled the air and made its way into my ears.
My eyes opened slowly, my hands reaching up to my face to rub my eyes before I sat up and leaned back, the palms of my hands helping me stay put.
I scanned the room, trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. I glanced down at my little brother, and my big brother, sleeping on both sides of me.
Slightly smiling at my little brother, I bent down to give him a kiss on his head. I did the same with my other brother but covered him with my blanket, since he insisted to let me use it to not "catch a fever", and got up as quietly as possible to not wake any of them up.
I've been appreciating my brothers and Dad more, well ever since we lost Mom.. Its been three weeks without having her presence around here and it won't be here anymore.
It's just us now.
We've been staying in a house that we found in the woods. It was old, I could tell by the moment I stepped inside. The crisp paint falling off the walls and some walls peeling at the corners, with dirty smuges.
I knew no one had found this house because it was so deep inside the woods and it looked like a normal house, before any of this shit started happening.
It had a lot of food and water, supplies we needed. We still have some but we are eating very little, so we have more for when we need it.
"Dad?" I spoke up as I saw him hammering nails through a big piece of wood to a window in the living room. Basically, covering the whole window and the outside world."What are you doing?"
"Nailing the windows shut." He simply answered, like it was the most obvious thing in the whole planet. He didn't look up at me while saying it, he kept nailing the window.
I can see that, Dad, but why.
"Why?" I asked as I leaned on the hallway door frame.
"To protect us," He sighed. "I spotted two of those things outside." He finally looked up at me.
"Really? There are never any of them around here." I said, making my eyebrows meet, as I walked over to a window my Dad hasn't nailed closed.
I pushed one of the curtains, a little, to the side and peeked. There was one of those things near the house, dragging his left broken leg, his bone in perfect view. I scrunched my nose at the sight.
That's gross, but I've seen worse.
Another one was roaming around in the woods but you can clearly see it from here.
"Thats weird Dad, there has never been any around here, not even a single one."
Well not until now.
"Yeah, well I think its just those two, so we'll be alright." He nodded and messed up my hair.
I raised my eyebrow, "Then why are you nailing the windows shut?"
"For reasurance"
I nodded, understanding. He's just doing this for our safety.
"Go rest kiddo, I'll be there soon enough when I finish with this." He stared at the windows.
"Okay, I love you Dad." I smiled and he smiled back, nodding.
I made my way to the room, I was in with my brothers and got in between them, sharing my brother's blanket to cover myself.
