「 the end of the world
kill or be killed 」
The blood dripping onto the wooden floor underneath her was like the sound of nails encasing the coffin of her sanity, close shut. It drove the young brunette mad. The continuous pattern of quiet thuds were the only thing she could hear. Her heart, now growing steady from its previously erratic pace. Dried crimson coated her skin. It wasn't a dream anymore, she wished it was. She wanted, desperately to wake up.
The smell of rot overwhelmed her senses, yet her limbs remained frozen. She couldn't move, she couldn't cry, she could only breathe, simply blink. The horrendous sight before her made her want to vomit... she didn't.
Her birthday was supposed to be in a couple weeks, her mother persuaded her into traveling back home to reunite with her friends. Her family wanted to surprise her. And what a surprise it was, to find her father feasting on the flesh of her mother.
The memory of her horrified screams were still unbelievably fresh in her mind, she could still hear the animalistic grunts and growls of her father as he advanced towards her. Vaania could vividly recall her own pleas for the man to snap out of whatever trance he was in.
How was she supposed to know the so called under control virus had seeped inside the man that was her hero? How could she even begin to guess the disease was no longer contained? That everyone had gotten it? How was Vaania supposed to cope with the end of their world as they knew it?
It was their reckoning. The nature's uprising, or better known as the apocalypse. The one her parents told her to fear, and the very same Armageddon every priest preached about, the event that would determine their destinies.
Vaania wasn't scared of it anymore, she made her peace with the unavoidable truth; the dead ruled the world now. She learned to adapt, to fight, to survive in the new reality. No matter the cost, whatever it took.
However, what truly terrified her was how fast their world had changed, how quickly people showed their real colors. At first, It was harder to accept that all humans held a hidden viciousness within themselves. Now, the cruelty of men was predictable.
With the world up in flames there was no more justice, no more governmental system enforcing the laws. She watched men and women relish in the chaos brewing all over the globe. Depravity ran rampant in every corner.
There was no room for mistakes, hesitation was not an option. No one could take any chances, it was kill or be killed. Vaania had to watch, even the most pure hearted people get consumed by the brutality of this new beginning.
The brunette was a witness to the way the outbreak transformed her friends into the people they didn't ask to be.
And she was no exception.
